Hello Carol, I know In Nassau County United Cerebral Palsy has a program that serves to TBI patients, and I believe they run a program that includes Art Therapy. I hope all goes well,

hello all,

a dear friend's husband suffered a traumatic brain injury about a month and a half ago. he is currently in speech/OT/PT rehab. she wondered if there was anything art therapy related that could be of help. i think art therapy would definitely be beneficial but am not sure how to go about it. any ideas or specific directives?

Hi Carol… Check out the rehab program at the Rusk Institute (NYC). What is so interesting and crutial with TBI is that some parts of the brain can function really well. I have a client who does well with technology.If the patient is open to it, I would explore his interests in Mixel, a free app for the iPad. It is a collage based artmaking process which also includes a Social Networking component.You could also explore the interaction with family photos or taking new photos with Paper Camera app, or in Photoshop Type Software. Interacting with memory could be a good thing? I would collaborate treatment plan with OT and his neurologist. Obviously things to consider are trauma, memory, grief, loss, depression and of course his motivation in meeting him where he is at.Basia MosinskiArt Psychotherapy
