Guest guest
Could be a number of things. Gluten free diet really helped my son feel appropriate pain sensations again. PANDAS flare ups cause more stimming and OCD in my son so ask doc to check for strep even if he has no other symptoms. Vaccine reaction could be to blame also or could be accumulation of heavy metals and vaccine put him over the top? I never had any luck with Prozac or any other anti anxiety drugs with my son. In fact they made him more anxious and aggressive as did every ADD med I tried. There are several great products I get through Dr. you can now get online one is called Calming Cream from Nuerobiologix but it really seems to me this behavior may be a strep flare up I'd go that path fist if I were in your shoes. I feel as if I've posted more in the last 2 months than I have in the last year. That being said, we're having yet another issue I was hoping I could get some advice & /or recommendations from parents out there. In the last week, our non-verbal 11 year old son had begun very occasionally lightly poking at his head. That lasted a few days & then it progressed to more-frequent in duration & more intense " head-knocking " & open-palm hitting within 24 hrs. We were out of town & I called our pediatrician & got an appt the next day (Friday) to rule out an underlying medical/dental condition. The exam didn't indicate any condition that might be indicative of a medical or dental issue. He also received his 2nd Varicella (Chicken Pox) & Pneumococcal injection at the appt. He was more lethargic & had a loss of appetite this weekend. He vomited last night after dinner & again this afternoon after eating lunch. I'm beginning to think there was a medical issue (stomach or other-wise) after all that was undiagnosed after all that worsened after the injections. He may have been as simple as a headache or stomach-ache that's difficult to ascertain as he's generally non-communicative & has a high tolerance for pain. He's re-gained his appetite & energy-level since he got sick this afternoon. The Dr's office recommended the usual protocol for post-vomiting care & unfortunately we couldn't get in for an appt today. We're not sure if maybe the self-injurious behaviors are sensory, medical, or attention-getting in nature (or combination of all 3) but would appreciate any advice or sharing of similar experiences. Prozac was recommended to address & reduce the self-injurious behavior as well as food-allergy testing, neurological testing, & a few other recommendations. My question is have any of you had experience with using Prozac to treat such behaviors with your child or any other medication or other approaches to reduce to address similar behaviors? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Dolly
Guest guest
The truth is any one of those reasons you mentioned could be why your child is presenting his behavior. My son was nonverbal at one time and would hit hkmelf in the face and head as well as bang his hwad on the floor and wall. We never did figure out why. But he did take prozac and it helped some. It was no mirical drug tbough. It calmned him down to a degree but then he would stl be somewhat agvitated in crowds. --- Original Message --- Sent: June 18, 2012 8:19 PM To: Texas-Autism-Advocacy Subject: Prozac & Self-Injurious Behavior  I feel as if I've posted more in the last 2 months than I have in the last year.
