Many things they had assumed she was unable to do were actually areas where she was quite capable, or at least desired to be, and they were surprised that their compensations were often over-compensations that she had outgrown. This did not mean that they could abruptly remove their support and tell Ellen she was on her own. Ellen's independence for everyday self-care and personal chores required a measured reduction of scaffolding and support.
