Guest guest
Well, I have had a few years down the road to think about how the life skills idea affected my son. I really believe that life skills can only be taught in the home. It doesn't make sense to create a room full of furniture and show a kid how to vacuum, for example, when it is better taught at home. People with autism live in the moment. Just think about that. Kids could use home skills training...right? Work on this with their parents. But, academics are definitely more important at school. I want you all to think about this, however, that learning doesn't end when school ends just like we all keep learning through life. What I am finding is that my son is learning better now that he is in his 30s, so be aware of this. Infact, I believe he is learning better than ever before. Work skills training is better than life skills. However, find the person a job before leaving school and don't let that job stop at transition. Also, I believe we are wrong not to encourage home based jobs. And, now we are seeing that technology jobs are perfect for people with autism. It is repetitive and they love it! I will never forget a lovely girl with Downs who was working with a group to clean an airplane engine with hundreds of parts at one of the local military bases. This group did things to perfection and the girl was so happy. Well, when she graduated then the job vanished. She spent years at home being depressed. We just can't let this happen!
