Guest guest Posted August 19, 2011 Report Share Posted August 19, 2011 Announcing: SVA MPS Art Therapy Department Annual Conference The Artistic Drive Friday, September 23, 2011 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. The department's annual conference will address how the artist's urge to create is manifested in "outsider art," fine art and art therapy. See below for more details. Location: SVA Theatre 333 West 23 Street New York, NY 10011 Schedule and Speakers: 9 a.m.-10 a.m. Registration and Continental Breakfast 10-11:30 a.m. Laurie , PhD, practicing psychoanalyst, art therapist, art historian and author. Dr. , a Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the New York University Medical Center and Professor Emerita of Art Therapy at NYU, is also author of art history books exploring the works of Alberto Giacometti and Louise Nevelson. Dr. will discuss possible motivations and inspirations for the creation of art, as they relate to both fine art and art therapy. 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Randy Vick, MS, Chair, Art Therapy Program at School of the Art Institute of Chicago. In addition to his experience as an art therapist, Mr. Vick has extensive knowledge of "Outsider" Art, particularly from historic collections and contemporary disability arts studios, and its relation to art therapy. He will discuss folk art and other traditions outside the fine art mainstream and how they can be an analogue for the art done by art therapy clients. Lunch Break 2:30-4:00 p.m. Randy Vick and Laurie will be joined by Francis Palazzolo (MA, Artist and Director of the Hospital Audiences, Inc. Art Studio) and na Driever (MA, contemporary art curator and American self-taught art specialist) for a panel discussion addressing The Artistic Drive. DiSunno (PhD, ATR-BC, RNCS, LCAT, SVA Faculty) will moderate the panel. Attendees may also pre-register for the event and pay at the door. Checks, credit cards, and money order will be accepted at the door, but not cash.
