Guest guest
Poor little Maddy! Is it just me or does anyone else just want to reach out and slap these doctors that let her suffer like this?! I am soooo frustrated...I just cannot even imagine your frustration ! When are they going to figure out what is going on with her?? SIGH Lots of prayers your way, for you, for Maddy, for the Docs and nurses to have guidance and compassion. HUGS, Subject: Maddy in hospital To: " tsc " <tetheredspinalcord > Date: Monday, August 16, 2010, 12:01 PM  Saturday afternoon Maddy had a grand mal seizure. We went to the ER,they did scans etc. They said she probably is coming down with a virus and take her home. Yesterday afternoon we were called back to the ER because they said the blood cultures showed some bacteria growth so she was admitted. She has a mediport so admitting doctor said she suspects line sepsis. She is on 2 different antibiotics. Her headache is still very bad,and they arent doing anything except tylenol, motrin,I had to ask for something stronger so they gave lortab which doesnt help. Nsg,neurology and peds will be by this morning. I wonder if they should tap her shunt as well. She isnt eating or drinking very well this morning. I think since she is inpatient they should try and get her pain under control. Keep Maddy in your prayers.
Guest guest
Hello, You are her advocate and you have to find a way to let them know she is in pain. Find out why they are not controlling it and then try to turn it around. She needs to get that pain under control as you say below. It's so hard to believe that in this day and age and all that is known that she has pain levels above a 2-4 in a hospital. My husband had three cardiac stents placed two weeks ago and complained that his pain was at a 2-3 (because he was asked what his level was) and he was given a bolus of morphine that made his blood pressure drop out and he began vomiting with 20 minutes of the injection into his IV. It was too much, his pain was only a 2-3 and it never went above that. One given too much and one not given enough - I don't get it. Guest guest
, I'll keep Maddy in my prayers. I agree - you are her advocate. I would bring this issue up directly with her MD when he does rounds. If it is his/her intern that does his rounds, address it with the intern and see that they handle it. If the intern does not handle her pain, I would request to see her MD and address it with him/her. Another option is to ask to speak with the Nurse manager on the floor. Discuss your concerns with the RN manager. They do have some pull. I was admitted after one of my cerebral bleeds. I was transferred from the ER of another hospital to the hospital where I was admitted. Then, they decided I didn't have a cerebral bleed (like the other hospital said I had), yet they weren't discharging me. They refused to give me pain meds. I had fought as much as I could, but wasn't really in a position to do much more. A friend called to check on me and was infuriated. She called the RN manager on the floor and I finally got some pain mgmt. That was the only dose I got during my stay (ultimately, I was d/c after 3 days with the same headache I was admitted with). A final option, most hospitals have a patient ombudsman. For some reason, I'm thinking this is required by law (but not sure). Check out the hospital for an ombudsman. The information desk should know. If all else fails, threaten to have her transferred to another facility. If you feel she isn't getting adequate care there, then that is what you need to do to get her the proper care. (When I had problems with the care my dad was getting as an inpatient at a hospital, I was very serious when I said I was going to have him transferred. But once I started raising cane and addressed my concerns with the RN manager, they were all over his care - like they should have been without my prodding). I agree with you about asking them to tap her shunt and make sure there isn't infection there. I was actually thinking spinal tap to make sure she didn't have meningitis. That can definitely cause fever and seizure. The only way to diagnose it is with a spinal tap. Best wishes for getting things straightened out with the hospital and getting Maddy the care she needs and deserves and for a speedy recovery.
