has she had a fba?Sent from my iPhone

If my daughter is 7 and if she has had behavioral problems which involve hitting of other kids for no clear reason since she was Age 2 then isn't the school legally obligated to hire a CERTIFIED ABA THERAPISTS to help? The district has brought in their version of 'behavioral therapists' but clearly not working. My daughter has been in 90% isolation for 3 weeks now and on a Point System that will land her staying in there! The bottom line is now the pdoc tells me last night that her professional opinion is that it's a behavioral problem and there are no meds that will target that part of the brain! I'm beyond frustrated right now! My dd only hits kids her size or smaller so therefore the doctor feels she needs to be taught about small people and how to communicate with them without hitting!

How many behavior assessments have been done since she began school?  What plans were devised?  How did they track how the plan worked or  didn't?  If the plan wasn't working, how long did it take before they devised a new intervention?  Where are their written " Response to Intervention reports. "

Children diagnosed with autism have behavior problems.  They have problems with sopcial interactions and social nuances.  You cannot punish a child for behavior that is part of the disability.  Period. This child needs ABA from a certified ABA who has CLINICAL experience - that means that the person must have worked with many kids and succeeded in changing behavior.  You need this therapy in school and per the autism supplement, they need to provide in home and family training.

This is what is " appropriate. "   This child is being locked away becasue they have no clue as to what to do, and obviously do not understand their obligation under hte law.  If they can't or won't provide a FAPE, then they can pay for her to go someplace where they can.

You need to write a " Revocation of ALL of the ARD Agreement " and then go back to ARD and ask for a change of placement to a private school at district expense.  Do not agree to isolation.  Your child needs help and you need help and it just sounds like all they want to do is blame your child.

But I want to impart to you that I firmly believe that diet plays a huge role in the manifestation of behavior in many children with autism.  You can do your part by reviewing your child's diet and moving toward one that is void of offending foods.  You can figure this out by doing a rotation diet and taking notes.

I know. I know.  You are thinking, " What difference can diet make? "   That is just what I thought over ten years ago.  But my son was kicking, hitting, and punching me.  I couldn't go anywhere as he would have horrendous meltdowns in public. Once he almost bit my finger off, and another time he put his hands around my throat and tried to choke me. (The choking incident was my fault.  He had been on a special diet for years, and I thought just once that he could have restaurant french fries.  He changed within thirty minutes from a well behaved child to one I didn't recognize and wound up trying to choke me).  To this day, I know if he gets offending foods, his behavior goes straight down hill.

My husband I I were very skeptical, but some therapists had recommended diet to us and we knew we had to try something.  Diet made all the difference in behavior for my son.I am sure there is a combination of factors going on here.  Your child may feel frustrated if they have not taught her academic skills.  She may feel isolated even when when isn't due to her disability and its limitations.  Can you imagine how frustrated you would feel if  you could not communicate your thoughts, feelings, needs, and wants very well?
