Thanks, my grandma had alzheimers. I’ve always thought of my son’s regressive autism related to alzheimers. What took 70 years to break down my grandma, happened very quickly with my little toddeler. Same genes, different times, different triggers?

No, this won't be a treatment for autism, but there is some exciting research happening in Alzheimers that WILL inform autism research.

Amyloid beta oligomers (the plaques that were discussed in the article below) build up only in the brains of Alzheimers patients. Almost the whole field of Alzheimers research has focosed on these amyloid beta plaques, but there really hasn't been much progress in improving Alzheimers by trying to reduce these plaques.

But here's the interesting thing - the presence of amyloid beta oligomers causes destabilization or disruption of synapses (the junctions between neurons), and synaptic disruption is the very same thing that researchers have seen in autism brain tissue samples. It's a little early to say that synaptic disruption is the cause of memory loss and behavioral changes in Alzheimers, but there is certainly a lot of evidence pointing to synaptic disruption as one of the primary factors in Alzheimers.

This is an area of great interest to me, because my son's autism is caused by a partial deletion of the Shank3 gene. Recently researchers have found that Shank3 becomes degraded in the presence of amyloid beta plaques. If we can "fix" Shank3, we could have effective compounds for both Alzheimers and some forms of autism. I am organizing a symposium to bring together researchers from Alzheimers and autism in order to help facilitate some cross-disease collaborations.

Alzheimers and Mice

I thought this was interesting.....perhaps one of you science moms could break it down for us? Potential for Autism treatment? Yes or No.

I've alwasy thought that Alzheimer's was just late-onset autism.  I read a book that was written way before Dr. Cutler's called " Toxic Metal Syndrome. "   It is truly eye opening, and refers to " Alzheimer's " as TMS.  It talks in depth about chelation helping those with Alzheimer's.

Once again, Trina we see how " we " are NOT at all more healthy thanks to all the advances in medicine.  The trouble with the current medical climate is that they think that just because we can we should.

I just read another article today about a scientist who has mutated the H5N1 virus.  If it escapes the lab (and it has been shown to spread on tiny droplets of saliva or seat or tears or mucous ....well, if it gets out then it will kill one out of every two people affected.

This is what I was talking about when I discussed drug companies and scientists being allowed to create and be in possession of the most deadly viruses and bacteria.  I wonder what they are capable of if their profits drop too low. It would be far too easy in the current climate to create a scenario that escalates profit.  Who is the new god?

Just because " we " as human being can manipulate viruses and bacteria, does that mean we should be allowed to do so?  I think not.And while the good mayor of our town stated in the paper that we parent who do not vaccinate are " a threat to us all, "   I say it is doctors and scientists such as this one who are serious threats to us all.

I just got a call from " New Wife " (Matt's name for my stepmother) saying she is taking Dad to a clinic in Austin where he is doing IV chelation. It has completely cured the pain he was having in his legs that all his specialists could find no reason or treatment for. I cautioned her about doing the test to make sure other minerals are not depleted but she assured me the doctor was doing all the testing. Her mother recently passed after suffering with Alzheimer's for many years and died in her home. I wonder if there is a study out there that shows how many more seniors now have Alzheimer's than even ten years ago. Is there just more seniors, or is the incidence rising. Next thing you know they will say we are just diagnosing it more.Still I think any research on Alzheimer's helps Autism although I think Alzheimer's will get more dollars because the general public is afraid it will happen to them., it's not just someones kid.

People live a lot longer now than they used to. Now it's pretty common for people to live past the age of 80 - in fact nearly 50% of people have Alzheimers by the time they reach the age of 85.

With so many people living to that age, yes, we should be deeply concerned about how we will care for our aging community and the burdens that will place on social programs, housing programs, and our families. So many of the problems faced by people with Alzheimers are the problems that many of us in the autism community understand all too well.

There is research that turmeric removes plaques as well as things like

high doses of Vitamin C. Also, research that I have seen says that

everyone with Alzheimers has high levels of Aluminum. They also

reportedly have spriochetal bacterial infections and mercury. Those

with autism are known to also have these issues plus more, of course. I

have seen several people on the autism forums, although definitely not

most of them, post that their child with autism has the plaques seen in

Alzheimer's, and their child was diagnosed with childhood Alzheimer's.

Even so, I have come across many scientific reports and posts by

individuals that they were able to rid their plaques with various

treatments aimed at detoxing, giving extra nutrients, special diets, and

killing various pathogens. The treatments listed on the forums and by

docs who are considered highly successful are very similar for autism,

Alzheimer's, Lyme Disease, chronic fatigue, ADHD, ALS, etc. Apparently,

the immune system has several stressors (too many pathogens, too many

toxins, too little nutrients, electrosmog, etc.) and of course, minor

genetic differences make us each more or less vulnerable to whatever we

are exposed to. Many of these minor genetic issues would not really be

noticeable had we not been exposed to high immune stressors. (Note:

turmeric (curcumin, Enhansa) are very commonly used in the autism biomed

arena).

Love and prayers,

Heidi N

In the book I mentioned before, it talks about a clinic in Oklahoma that chelates older people who have Alzheimer's with good success. Is there anyone out there besides me who feels they have more brain fog than they ought to?  If I could find a way to get my amalgams out, I would be chelating immediately.  I, too, wonder how much toxins play a role in my aches and pains and especially in the neuropathy that has come on in the last year or so.

I don't think it is just becasue we are living longer (on average); I think our environment (internal and external) is making a big difference.  What good is it to live longer if you do not have your mind with which to enjoy it.  My best friend's mom is in a home now due to Alzheimer's.  She was FINE until she went in for gall bladder surgery and they gave her anesthesia.  When she came out of that, her " Alzheimer's " was markedly pronounced compared to before the surgery.  It makes you wonder.....
