Guest guest
Hi all, I will post a longer intro soon, but I have a question. Has anyone gotten a butterfly-shaped rash on the neck after starting thyroid meds?I just got my thyroid results back (brand new thyroid patient). They are:TSH: 1.530 uIU/ML (normal 0.450-4.5)T4: 7.7 ug/dL (normal 4.5-12)T3: 76 ng/dL (normal 71-180)Antistreptolysin O Ab 47.9 IU/mL (normal 0-200)TPO: 60 IU/mL (normal 0-34)Both my father and sister are diagnosed hypo. My father is not doing well on Synthroid, still has overwhelming fatigue, irritability and other hypo symptoms, but refuses to discuss switching meds or adding T3 with his doctor. My sister also did poorly on Synthroid, but switched to Armour and is doing great. But I digress . . .Back to my issue. Dr. Hamel in Arlington diagnosed Hashi's. He said that my T3 needs to be bumped up to a 20:1 ratio with T4 instead of its current 10:1. Started me on Armour, 30 mg. 1x day for the first three days, then 2x day after that. He also strongly suspects adrenal fatigue, and we're waiting for results from my saliva test.Today I noticed that my neck has a red butterfly-shaped rash right where my thyroid is. That's happened a couple times before. Last year, briefly and slightly and I couldn't figure out why, and just a few months ago, within a couple days of starting an OTC thyroid supplement (Young Living Thyromin). It went away when I stopped taking the Thyromin after one month. I mentioned it to Dr. Hamel, and he said it was likely an allergic reaction of some sort, unrelated to thyroid. But now that it's happened in the exact same spot, again when starting different thyroid meds, it's got me wondering. A few hours of research on the net pulled up very little info. When I got the rash on the other two occasions, the rash was kinda like very dry chicken skin, and somewhat red. No amount of lotions or exfoliating had any impact. Now it is smooth but very noticeably red. It also feels just a little warm on the inside, like it's coming from my thyroid gland. My husband said he can feel a slight temperature change over the red area. Also, my throat feels just very slightly constricted, could even be my imagination. I felt both the slight warmth and the almost-imperceptible tightness last time I got the rash, too, with the Thyromin. If anyone has any info, experience, or advice about this type of rash, I'd much appreciate it. I've got an appointment with the doctor in a week and a half to go over my adrenal results. I plan to mention it to him then. Or should I mention it to him sooner? Thanks,DFW
Guest guest
Hi ,My oldest son had a rash like that - they tried to tell him that it was a fungal infection. But, it went away once he started taking Armour again, so I suspect it was thyroid related as I did find some information suggesting that as a possibility. You don't note whether the T3 and T4 are totals or Free. Either way, your T3 is quite low. The hashi's is definitely genetic and it's too bad your father would rather feel poorly than add the T3. Also, you should be tested for celiac (the most highly under diagnosed genetic disorder in this country) as research shows there is a high correlation between folks with hashi's and celiac. The same should go for your sister and father. But, in my experience, parents are really stubborn when it comes to accepting that their kids are sick because of the genes they inherited from their parents. B.
