Guest guest
Jill, you are surely going to lose weight with the runs. I'm told most get over it after a period of adjustment, some say 2 weeks. Sam

Hi, I am new to this list but a veteran of DM Type II - 8 years. I was put on Glyciphage since last 5 years. I suppose this is same as Glociphage that Jill is talking about. The basic drug is Metformin. My experience with Metformin is good. As per the Doc's prescription, I took 500mg twice a day half hour before meals. It certainly improved my bg control. However I can not say that about the side effects. I had gastric trouble and it lasted for 5 years! Docs always treated it with other gastric related medications which gave relief for a short period. Recently I refered to a pharmacopoeia and saw information about Metformin. There it is clearly mentioned that the drug had gastric side effects and that the drug is to be taken on full stomach! Such a simple thing! I immediately switched the drug to after meals and it worked. Since last 3 months I do not have recurrence of any gastric trouble and I certainly hope it continues this way. May be Jill's trouble is related to this or any such drug adjustment factor. Rahul.
Guest guest
Pahul, I was able to lose weight and control my sugar by restricting starch in my diet. I personally don't think medication is a long term solution to control. It seems to me to be a situation with no plus side, only minuses. There is no way to improve your situation. Diabetes isn't a disease that can be cured by medication. Sam
Guest guest
The only negative side affect I have seen with glucophage is that it brought my bg down to 32 when taking 500mg. I cut it down to 250mg and that seems to do the trick. But then again, I have only been on it for a few days. Guest guest
Rick, it sounds to me like you are a good canditate for dietary control only, I gave up fats, and reduced starch intake and was able to lose weight, get off insulin off oral to diet only. Guest guest
Rick - 32!!!! That sounds like it must have caused some problems - how did you deal with that? I have not taken medicine - so far being able to control my BG with a new way of eating and exercise (low carb) Sounds like you might be able to do the same thing - way to go for not ignoring this doing something about it. Guest guest
Hi, I agree that DM can not be cured with medicines. However, Medication, diet and exercise in right proportion is the treatment for diabetes. Each person has a different metabolism and depending on the exact nature of the ailment, treatment has to be decided by the doc. Some can do away with diet only (like my father) and some need a mix of diet and medication (like me). Exercise though, is a non-neglectable factor as a universal sugar and calory burner. Drugs and their doses for the same medication also differ as per body chemistry. That is why you need qualified medicos monitoring and adjusting your condition regularly. Rahul. Guest guest
Rick, Is glucophage the only med you are taking? Also have you drastically changed your diet and amount of exercise? The reason I ask is that glucophage doesn't usually cause lows the reason being that it doesn't cause your body to create more insulin, it only makes your cells more receptive to it (and then your body will reduce the amount it makes). SO I'm wondering if your diet and exercise aren't contributing to your lows Also, if you go low carb, that will probably no longer be a problem Meenie Re: meds > > >The only negative side affect I have seen with glucophage is that it brought my bg down to 32 when >taking 500mg. Guest guest
Rahul, doctors seldom stress self control of diabetes, the training takes too long, and there is no profit in it. Doctors training in diabetes is usually weak, I think we are more motivated to control for ourselves. Sam

Docs have to buy condos and yachts too ;-) That is where self education comes in to picture. Self discipline about diet and exercise will better control your bg so that your need for medication will reduce. It is also important that you adjust to your individual needs and do not resort to any fanatic diet or exercise plans just because it is the current fad. However take guidance from your Doc about medication. Acting on your own about medication including changing dosage or stopping altogether is dangerous. Rahul. Guest guest
Rahul, I think we have to be our own doctors. I was put on a set single dose of insulin. I read about varioua insulin regimes and bought myown insulin and set and adjusted my own insulin regimen. As an electrical engineer I knew how to use meters for best results, and did so. I realized I had never been tested for oral medication, went to Mexico and bought it, and was able to go on oral. I learned about NO FAT, and lost weight, and started hjaving low blood sugar, I went to the lowest dose of oral, soon I was forced off to diet only. I think we have to keep our doctors honest and up to date, sam
Guest guest
Hi -- I'm new to the list and I keep finding helpful tidbits. , it sounds like there's a good chance the glucophage isn't working effectively anymore. From what I understand, this is not unusual. My guess is that you may need to try a shorter acting insulin to get your sugars under control. You'll feel better. Once your sugars have stabilized for awhile, you may only need the N again. Instead of the R, however, a doctor may recommend increasing the N. Definitely see a doctor about this, don't wait, take care of it by going to the ER if you have to. You'll feel better sooner. Good Luck. from Canada > >Reply-To: diabetesonelist >To: diabetesonelist >Subject: Re: meds >Date: Sat, 27 Nov 1999 10:11:43 -0500 > > > >dear meenie - i am walking, i am watching everything that i eat, taking >2 glucophage a day plus 40 units of humulin n -fasting sugars this >morning? 380 - vision blurred - not well - my doc is in fla - what do >you think that i should do? i have not had a donut, potatoes, nothing >like that - i feel so bad i am crying - steve wants me to go to the er - >what do you think > >Meenie wrote: > > > > > > > > Rick, > > Is glucophage the only med you are taking? Guest guest
Hi , If your bg's are 380 and your vision is blurry despite taking your meds, you should probably go to the ER. Something is going on to affect your bg's. It could be an infection, but you should absolutely get it checked out.
