"Half the walk is but retracing our steps." - Henry Thoreau

Before I began walking the short distance to work every day, the path seemed humdrum and unchanged. Walking, however, invigorated my mind with an every-morning and an every-evening newness. In RDI, we pepper our engagements with these just-noticeable-differences, admitting that nature thought of it first. As you walk today, take note of the small changes.

Dear ,

This week, join us as RDI Consultant, Jo Fokkes, shares another encouraging story of how RDI is bringing normalcy to families and Ellen's Parents discover that knowledge isn't everything.

Sink or Swim: The Further Adventures of Ellen

Am I missing Something?

by le Sheely, Ph.D.

It has been said that knowledge is power, and therein, the dilemma. Once Ellen's parents received her diagnosis, they read everything they could read on autism, attended as many meetings as they could find and, as her mother remembers, their lives became "autism" lives. In speaking with many families over the years this is an experience that resonates.

While we believe that information is important, RDI also believes that a focused direction with small engagements every day is a better antidote for re-establishing a normal family life than a piled-up frenzy. For our readers who experience autism through the eyes of others, this seems a reasonable approach. However, hearing the diagnosis of "autism" applied to one's child creates an emotional challenge, almost without parallel. The questions, "Am I doing enough?" and "Am I missing something?" underlie even the most resolute, confident parents.

Finding Normalcy

by Jo Fokkes

RDI Consultant, Jo Fokkes

The following is the story of a family who has found some normalcy through our work with RDI. I initially heard from them in late 2009 and today, they are feeling like a normal family...for the first time in their history.

The family is Mum, Dad and three boys, two of them on the spectrum.

When we first met, only the first child, ny, had been diagnosed. He had been traumatized by his attendance at preschool with unsympathetic teachers and was almost nonverbal. Sammy, the second child was not diagnosed at that stage but was throwing huge tantrums and doing things like opening the doors of moving cars. They had a baby brother, and had just moved to a new area.

Following is part of the mum's first email to me:

September, 2009

Thank you so much for your time yesterday. I'm still learning about ASD. My husband has just started a new job so he has read very little and is relying on me to read and explain. I think he needs to hear about ASD from someone who knows more because during the diagnosis process we were told very little about it, especially that siblings have a 1 in 8 chance of also being ASD. I'd like you to explain it more since I'm struggling to explain how the small things can become big as he gets older.
