Hi to all the gang

Has any one heard of or know anything about Alpha Lipoic Acid

(LA)? I was on a web site looking for NAC and the pill I found had

both NAC and this Alpha Lipoic Acid in it, so I looked up what it

does. It supposed to do some good things. It helps diabetic with

there sugar, which I am, so that's a good thing. It helps rats from

aging; the wife calls me a rat-fink (a old car joke from the 60's) so

that could be a good thing, and it also helps oxidative stress.

Don't know what that is. Raises glutathions Levels 30 –

70%. " Functions as a cofactor in energy production. Acts as a free

radical scavenger, and helps regenerate the effects of other

antioxidants. " One site said, " LA has a clear advantage over NAC.

NAC serves as a onetime cysteine donor, as LA has ability to service

continuous supplies of cysteine a precursor for glutathione (GSH)

synthesis. " GSH deficiencies have been documented in COPD &

IPF. " LA leads to increase activity of elastase and degradation of

elastin in the lungs, a process that has been implicated in COPD. "

Elastase is an elastic substance in the lungs that supports their

structural framework. The spot where the elastase is, is the same

spot that the IPF scaring happens. So if it helps that spot it could

help us. My upper chest does not expand any more so that lead me to

think that degradation of my elastin is happening. Well who knows if

LA will help or not but I ordered some to give it a try.

Hello , How did the Alpha Lipoic Acid work out. I ordered some today. I did two doctors today. Kidney man wants to operate by installing stint in line that comes out of one of my kidneys. Says I have a narrow place that he may be able to fix. He said (you don't look too good} and he called the lung man to set me up an appointment before he will touch me. Lung man is in same medical center so I decided to do a walk in. The lady that makes the appointments for the lung man, took one look at me and told me to sit down. She said I just called your wife and made you an appointment. She called a nurse and I got a blood gas test and another 6 min walk. Nurse told me to raise ox level when I was active. Went by the ox store and asked for 2 roll around tanks. Nurse told me to ask for whatever I needed to keep going. Boy that medicare and supplement ins is good stuff. Doctor asked me if I wanted the operation. I said what would you do. He replied, lets see what the lung man says. Lungs-Heart-Kidneys-Diabeties-Is there some point where you give up? The man that operated on my wife's eyes has had cancer and only has one lung. He is carrying a full work load. Some people don't give up. Grey PS I keep the good stuff.

Grey,

I had this stint in the ureter (which runs between the kidney and bladder) surgery about 15 years ago. Mine closed all the way off and the pain was incredible. Ended up in the emergency room begging to die and was put on morphine. They did the surgery and I stayed in the hospital about 2-3 days. Then had the stint removed in the docs office (no pain) after a few weeks. The interim was not pleasant but I have had no further trouble....nor do I want to.

I have been put to sleep for several surgeries since diagnosis with PF years ago. One major surgery. I have always done real well. The surgeons have always consulted with my pulmonary doc. I wonder if they could use a nerve block instead for the stint surgery.

Wow, you have been busy this week. No wonder you are feeling so badly. -Is there some point where you give up? No Sir!

God's blessings to you and your wife. How is her eye doing?

Hello Joyce, Wife is doing great. He is going to do the other eye Tuesday. They say they have to have a family member present for some reason. My son is going with her this time. I know it must upset people to see a really sick person with oxygen and a cane stumbling around trying to make it. I noticed the look of shock on people's faces to see someone as sick as I am. The waiting rooms I have been in are not filled with people who can't get out of a chair without help. I can get out of car by pulling myself up with door. When I go out people stare and I just look away. I don't want their pity. I'm just trying to keep going as long as I have the strength. I'm getting weaker. Just glad to be here so I can have some more fried chicken, hot biscuits and mashed potatoes. I intend to keep on trying. GOOD LUCK GREY

Dear Gray: Don't forget the gravy on the potatoes or the honey for the biscuits. When people stare I always approve the THUMB THE NOSE approach. God bless you. May God Keep You In The Palms Of His Hands now and forever. jose singletary wrote: Hello Joyce, Wife is doing great. He is going to do the other eye Tuesday.
