Regarding the " Dawn Effect " - I have always wondered if eating a little

something really late at night to make the " fasting time " not so long would

help? Anyone ever try this? Rebekah

a question about low carb diet...

I am fairly new to this list and am hoping for inspiration! I've been a

Type 11 diabetic for two years who has basically been in denial! Other than

taking my oral med once a day (Glucotrol XL), I've done nothing else correctly.

About a week ago, I started a low carb, high protein diet and have fairly

excited about the results. My BS 1 1/2 hours (I know I should wait 2 hrs for an

accurated PP BS but I was just curious!) after a meal have been about 130. This

is a far cry from where I've been. I've dropped a few pounds in this week. I am

a night nurse (yes, I know I should know better!) and ate breakfast this a.m.

before going to bed and took my pills, like I do every morning. I woke up this

afternoon, finally brave enough to do a fasting and it was 218!!! I am so

disappointed!!! My breakfast didn't have any carbs in it! What am I doing

wrong? Thanks, Chris

Hi

I work in the hospital too and I DO know better <G> I follow a low carb, hi

protien diet and my bg's are now great. For me, this has been a wonderful way

to control them

What were your fasting BG's before starting this woe?

When I started, my bg's took about 3-4 weeks to come into line, although they

started coming down right away. The LAST to give in and get into line was the

morning fasting one. The Dawn Effect, I'm sure.

It was a die-hard, but it makes sense if you think about it. Your bg's are

suddenly lower than they have been for months, you go to sleep and they drop

even lower, your liver goes Oh my gosh!! and dumps a big load of glucose cause

it sees " normal " right now as being too low! My advice would be keep with it a

little longer and see if that morning (or in your case, waking, hehe)bg doesn't

get better each day.

BTW - you don't have a cold or infection coming on do you? That raises bg's

also.

So... other than that, what have you been eating in a normal day on your low

carb plan? I'm on Atkins and keep my carbs at 20 or less a day.

in my opinion the fasting sugar is a review of your carbos from

the day before. I find it reflects your general level of diet.

Less overall food I believe will bring that number down.

Hi FP,

I had 3 slices of peppered bacon and 2 eggs. Oh... and diet coke! :) I think

I've heard that diet drinks can sometimes cause problems. I truly hope this

isn't true. It didn't cause a problem over the weekend. Thanks, Chris

Hi Meenie,

What were my BS before??! Who knows?? I hadn't taken it in months!!

Denial, remember?? When I took it regularly, it was always higher in the a.m.

than two hours PP. I never did get that! No cold now, but did get the flu shot

last week. Okay, I'll stick with it. Is there anything else I can do to

decrease the Dawn Effect? I'm just getting started on the low carb diet, so I'm

still trying to make it interesting, but bkfst is bacon & eggs, lunch might be

tuna or meat with a green veg. and dinner more of the same. I was reading the

Heller book and found it to be boring and lots of psychobabble!! I'm sure it's

me! I appreciate your help! Thanks, Chris

There are two possible drawbacks to diet sodas.

One is the sweet taste can cause you to crave sweets, even tho it really isn't

sugar - I guess its some kinda psychological trigger.

Two, the citric acid found in many diet drinks can cause some people to stall in

their weight loss.

If you continue to lose weight, don't worry about it, if you stall then look to

this as a possible culprit.

I have cut my consumption to 1 glass a day with dinner. I try to drink water

the rest of the time to get in alllll those glasses of that you're sposed to

drink... I slosh :)

The bacon and eggs are fine, just watch the labels on the bacon - some bacon is

cured with sugar! Same with sausage and ham. :)

Sam, at one time you said you were getting Atkin's book, if you have it I

would suggest you read pages 64 through 67 in which the Metabolic Advantage

of a low carb diet is explained and why a man who was eating more calories

than he did before starting low carb was losing 3.5 lbs a week .

But beyond anything to do with low carbing... you need to do some research

on the dawn effect - it has to do with much more than the calories you eat

during the day, it is much more a response to the lowering of bg's during

the sleep period, and the " before dawn " response as your body prepares to

start a new day.

Well I t sure doesn't appear you had too many carbs. I'm at a loss unless it's

a carry over from a previous period. Was the rest of the day normal and before

that?

That a lot of fat on that diet. I usually have one egg per meal that

substitute for on exchange of meat at breakfast time. Or I just have on

slice of bacon per breakfast.

Hi Fp,

I can't figure it out either. But the body uses protein for fuel, as well,

doesn't it? so is it possible I've just overdone in in either fats or protein?

I've been eating small, frequent meals (maybe every 4-6 hours) while awake. To

figure out what's going on, I'm going to have to keep a diary and face reality.

Doing BS's ever few months simply isn't going to cut the mustard!! My physician

is wayyyyy to easy on me! P.S. I like that font, too!

hello Meenie, thanks for reminding me about the Atkins book,

they did not have it at to store, and I forgot.

I copied this paper on the dawn effect.

An Apple A Day, from Diabetes Forecast, the ADA magazine of June 98 For

people with diabetes, fruit’s a natural choice for satisfying a sweet

tooth. Fruit is a natural thirst quencher. Most are 80 % water. With all

the fruits available you will never be bored. On an ounce for ounce

basis fruits are lower in calories than most foods. They are a high

nutrient density food, that is, they contain many essential vitamins and

minerals for the calories they contain. There is evidence that pectin,

the soluble fiber in fruit can lower your cholesterol level. Try to eat

fruit in season: fruits taste better during the season when they are

abundantly available. Try to consume fruit within a few days of purchase

for maximum flavor and nutrition. End quotes

At my house there are pears, bananas, kiwis, mangoes, apricots, plums

ripening on the counter. There is oranges for breakfast. Cantaloupe,

grapes and strawberries in the refrigerator. I eat my fruit with vanilla

yogurt, purchased in quart sizes for $2. I add sweetener to the

grapefruit, to kiwis and some to yogurt. The yogurt has 4 active

bacillus cultures which change your intestinal flora for the better. It

helps with gas and smells. I use fruit for my daily source of

carbohydrates, they raise you sugar levels less than wheat products, and

are gone quickly. I eat about every 2 hours to keep my sugar even.. I

have a salad for lunch with olives, some meat and cheese. I have a small

salad at dinner, steamed vegetable, nuked potato and meat. Enjoy!

Carbohydrates are starches or sugars. Starches are long chain molecules

the body digests to glucose. They are concentrated, they will give you

higher sugars longer than fruit sugar. It occurs to me that plain sugar

is all fruit sugar, from cane or beets. It is merely concentrated. A

writer expressed surprise that bread gave her a higher sugar than

chocolate syrup. It lasts longer as well. You can have sugar as a

sweetener in your favorite chocolate if you make room for it in your

diet.

Thats an interesting article about fruit, Sam, but it doesn't mention the

dawn effect?

I don't eat yogurt. Most of them list sugars from 27 grams to 32 grams...

thats 7 - 8 spoon fuls of sugar in that little container. Imagine putting

that much sugar into your glass of tea...

Thats because he is on a low carb, high protein diet, Luan Pham.

You are on a different type diet that doesn't allow for that much fat.

You can't have the carbs and the higher fats together.

sorry, I had the wrong thing on my clipboard.

Dawn Phenomena from Stop the Rollercoaster, Walsh

More than half of diabetics have a morning rise in blood sugar. In type

1 diabetes it is triggered by a normal increase in growth hormone

production during the early morning hours. Growth hormone causes the

liver to release more sugar.

In type 2 diabetes, a similar rise is triggered by insulin resistance

and excess abdominal weight. When someone stops eating during the night,

fatty acids from fat stores in the abdomen are released into the blood.

The more fat the more released. The release of excess fat is often seen

as high triglyceride levels. Some fats cause resistance to insulin. The

liver interprets this excess fat and relative lack of insulin as a low

blood sugar and starts making glucose. Meanwhile the muscle cells have

become resistant to insulin cannot use as much of the extra glucose

produced by the liver, and the blood sugar rises overnight. The livers

production is often hard to shut off and causes high sugars all day.

A medication called glucophage has the effect of suppressing this

release.

It has been suggested that a piece of fruit in the evening like a small

green apple can prevent it happening by providing some complex

carbohydrate. Don’t overeat.

Ahhh Sam...

Much better <G>

They really don't completely understand the Dawn Phenomenon yet and there

are several theories out there, but they do know the liver dumps excess

glucose early in the am and it seems to be some kind of response to the body

getting ready to awaken. Interesting isn't it? When you stop and think of

all the chemical reactions going on within your body all the time and that

no one knows why all of them even happen!
