Guest guest
hi everyone - have a great thanksgiving - i have been cooking and cleaning all week - the house smells good and the kids are coming over - the day is rainy and cold but we have lots of love to warm us up! i saw the new doc on monday and have lost 5 lbs - he has put me on glucophage and inc the humulin N to15 units in the morning and 15 at might - sugars are slowly coming down - i am not feeling very well but could be the flu starting - so very tired and still so thirsty - while everyone is gorging on appetizers, i have going to be having raw veggies and sparkling water - am being very careful with the carbs and not having a sweet potatoes - just a tiny bit of mashed -- does everyone sort of have trouble controlling their diets at this time of the year? i have made 4 pies and drool thinking of them! also wanted to ask - is 15 units twice a day a lot of insulin? just curious -- heard that it makes you gain weight -- hugs
Guest guest
, I read that humans secrete 40-50 units of insulin a day, but can store and release hundreds. I managed to get off insulin by a low fat diet, to oral, lost weight, and manage on diet only. When you eat more than you burn, you end up wearing it, insulin stores it away. I see no long term solution but diet. I reduced fat, and then starches. Sam
Guest guest
, The amount of insulin is dependant on a lot of factors but I don't think it's a lot. When I was on Injections I was takin 75 to 80 units per day R and N. I was 220 lbs., 5'11 1/2 " , and physical activity was almost 0. fp > > > > >hi everyone - have a great thanksgiving - i have been cooking and >cleaning all week - the house smells good and the kids are coming over - >the day is rainy and cold but we have lots of love to warm us up! > >i saw the new doc on monday and have lost 5 lbs - he has put me on >glucophage and inc the humulin N to15 units in the morning and 15 at >might - sugars are slowly coming down - i am not feeling very well but >could be the flu starting - so very tired and still so thirsty - while >everyone is gorging on appetizers, i have going to be having raw veggies >and sparkling water - am being very careful with the carbs and not >having a sweet potatoes - just a tiny bit of mashed -- > >does everyone sort of have trouble controlling their diets at this time >of the year? i have made 4 pies and drool thinking of them! > >also wanted to ask - is 15 units twice a day a lot of insulin? just >curious -- heard that it makes you gain weight -- >hugs
Guest guest
Hi , It is a good bit of insulin - some people do take more. The glucophage hopefully will make your body less resistant to insulin so if you keep good dietary control and keep those numbers coming down maybe you will be able to get off the insulin. What kind of diet are you following? As you know I do low carb - I follow Atkins and discovered low carb really lowers my bg's tremendously. Now I'm reading Dr Bernstein's Diabetes Solution and fine tuning my diet even more. He suggests 6 carbs for breakfast and 12 for lunch and for dinner. (each) This is a little more than the 2week induction phase of Atkins (20 g a day). Today I will have egg muffins for appetizers (ground sausage is pressed into mini muffin tins, then an egg mixture poured in and baked... mmm they're good. I can have all the turkey I want, no dressing or taters, but veggies are fine. Then I've made a cheesecake made with splenda for dessert - can't wait for that It's the carbs that send bg's soaring. I was running 180 - 200 before starting low carb, now am in a normal range - no meds. Guest guest
- 15 units of insulin twice a day is not a lot, at least to me. I am taking about twice that amount. I had to get off the glucophage since it wasn't working anymore and went on insulin last January. My endocrinologists both told me not to worry about the amount of insulin you are taking - the important thing is to get the blood sugar down so you'll feel better. Incidently, I went on the Dr. Atkins diet recently and it is doing wonders at lowering the blood sugar - I have been decreasing my insulin and getting normal range readings. I feel much more energetic too. You might ask your Dr. about it. My Dr. approved my going on Atkins. I am not hungry and am enjoying the diet. Hope you feel better soon. - Pat Re: OT: happy T-Day > > > > >hi everyone - have a great thanksgiving - i have been cooking and >cleaning all week - the house smells good and the kids are coming over - >the day is rainy and cold but we have lots of love to warm us up! > >i saw the new doc on monday and have lost 5 lbs - he has put me on >glucophage and inc the humulin N to15 units in the morning and 15 at >might - sugars are slowly coming down - i am not feeling very well but >could be the flu starting - so very tired and still so thirsty - while >everyone is gorging on appetizers, i have going to be having raw veggies >and sparkling water - am being very careful with the carbs and not >having a sweet potatoes - just a tiny bit of mashed -- > >does everyone sort of have trouble controlling their diets at this time >of the year? i have made 4 pies and drool thinking of them! > >also wanted to ask - is 15 units twice a day a lot of insulin? just >curious -- heard that it makes you gain weight -- >hugs

Guest guest
The trouble with type II's on insulin is this. If they are still producing their own insulin then the added insulin is really just being given as a battering ram. Your cells are resistant to using insulin so you already have excess floating around in your body cause it just can't get in, now you're adding more to try and force it's way in. The more insulin floating around with nothing to do - the more weight you gain. This isn't to say that taking insulin isn't good!! If you are at a point where you need it, thats fine, use it! Getting those bg's down is job ONE. But then alter your diet and find what gives YOU the best result so you can lower your intake of insulin or even get off it completely. I know it's hard to change your lifestyle. It's hard to smell all that good cooking and pass it by. But there are alternatives that are pretty tasty - give it a try and see . Guest guest
Hey FP, Dr Bernstein's approach is a little less radical than Atkin's. You might look into it. His book is definately interesting and I can relate to him well since he is diabetic as well and pretty much learned to control his bg's on his own since at the time diabetics weren't even allowed to have a meter!! (doctors said it would be impossible for human beings to control their bg levels!) Guest guest
If you find a modified version that works, let us know. All I know is my Dr. approved the Dr. Atkins diet. It works and I'm not going to tempt fate. Why would you want to try a modified version without trying the original.? I would like the lbs to come off faster, but am so happy with the drop in blood sugar. Figure my system will get around to dropping more weight, once it takes care of my insulin. I need to reread Atkins and get better organized. - Pat Re: OT: happy T-Day >> >> >>> >>> >>> >>> >>>hi everyone - have a great thanksgiving - i have been cooking and >>>cleaning all week - the house smells good and the kids are coming over - >>>the day is rainy and cold but we have lots of love to warm us up! >>> >>>i saw the new doc on monday and have lost 5 lbs - he has put me on >>>glucophage and inc the humulin N to15 units in the morning and 15 at >>>might - sugars are slowly coming down - i am not feeling very well but >>>could be the flu starting - so very tired and still so thirsty - while >>>everyone is gorging on appetizers, i have going to be having raw veggies >>>and sparkling water - am being very careful with the carbs and not >>>having a sweet potatoes - just a tiny bit of mashed -- >>> >>>does everyone sort of have trouble controlling their diets at this time >>>of the year? i have made 4 pies and drool thinking of them! >>> >>>also wanted to ask - is 15 units twice a day a lot of insulin? just >>>curious -- heard that it makes you gain weight -- >>>hugs >>
Guest guest
Well my goal for weight loss is only about 10 lbs. Guest guest
Congrats on the weight loss!!! That is wonderful, especially this time of year. When I was in private practice, this time of year was very slow for a dietitian. I mean, who wants to start a diet during the holidays! Everyone was waiting for the new year. So even though I am not diabetic, I have to say yes, many people have trouble staying on ANY type of diet this time of year. I used to try to point out that between Halloween and New Years, you basically have 4 holiday days; Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years (my birthday is in there also but you don't have to celebrate it if you don't want to). This is just 4 days out of roughly 60. So, the eating does not have to be everyday. I think what it comes down to is this; you just feel so much better when you are lean and healthy. I recently lost 45 pounds myself (see, dietitians can have eating problems too; pass the chocolate!) through diet and exercise and I love it. More energy, more flexibility, a better outlook on life, no more heartburn, more compliments plus the thrill that I have to steal my 21 year old sons blue jeans cause mine are waaay too big. This to me is MUCH better than ANY chocolate, no matter how rich and yummy. Guest guest
M & M's? Heck, how about Hershey Kisses. With Almonds!!!! To die for. Seriously (well, not really); this is what made me do it. Back in July, I went to the mall to do some clothes shopping. I RARELY go to the mall but big sale, etc. etc. etc. Anyway, picked out some clothes, walked into the dressing room, took a look at myself in the three way mirror and thought " holy smoke, where did that ass come from " (excuse my crudity here). Took my appetite away. Literally. I try to joke with my patients a lot. Some ask me how to determine Ideal Body Weight. I suggest they go home, pull down all the shades, undress and take a good look at themselves in the mirror (a full length mirror is good for this). If they like what they see, good. If not, time to consider doing something about it. If they want, they can also jump up and down a few times, then stop. If their stomach or thighs or butt keeps moving long after they have stopped jumping, time to do something about it. Hey to me, this is as accurate as any weight chart. Guest guest
It's unfortunate, Pat, but there has been so much negative press on this woe that a lot of people are still afraid to try it. Thankfully, more and more doctors are beginning to see it as the tool it can be - fortunately for us. The media loves the controversy, never mind the truth. I've had several friends who have first told me I was going to kill myself, then gotten interested in " tasting " some of my concoctions, and finally are reading the book and/or doing the woe themselves. Seeing is believing I remember being leery of trying this myself! Guest guest
Meenie I know what you are talking about! I remember someone saying it takes a " click " going off in your head to give the willpower. All I can say is, seeing my butt in that mirror gave me the " click " . I gotta say I always hated exercise. But at 47, I knew diet wasn't gonna do it alone. So, I started bike riding (picture this; a 47 year old woman on a 25 year old bike; yuck). And was pleasantly surprised at how quickly my body responded. By the end of the first week, I noticed increased stamina and flexibility; plus a better outlook on life. This, of course, gave me more incentive to stick with it. I read once if you can stick with a habit for at least 3 months, it becomes a lifestyle. Just doing it one day at a time. Guest guest
Low carb will do that, FP and you don't have to do the restrictive induction phase to do it either, but induction does help you overcome your carb cravings.
