Find Us Dear Friend Enjoy a poem written in collaboration by a group of friends and enjoy another story, shared by Carol Subramani, of how RDI has changed a family's life. ~ le Sheely, PhD * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * I Never Told Anybody by Dr le Sheely In RDI we recognize that the mental capabilities of persons on the spectrum can vary widely and, in some ways, mirror the capabilities of the larger population . We also know that to simply put a young person in a group without the crafted support related to dynamic intelligence can have limited benefit. The creative process, even in a group setting, can flourish with the right kind of structure. The following poem was written by a group of teenagers-the supportive structure built into the poem is based on the work of Koch. I NEVER TOLD ANYBODY When I was little I wet my bed rode on the back of my dog like he was a horse and met but I never told anybody. I'm afraid of mushroom, gymnastics, that nervous tight edgy feeling about height, scary snoopy dogs and I still remember that duck that snapped my finger when I stuck it in its mouth but I never told anybody. I hate not having a girlfriend that I can take to the movies snobs and preps, their arrogance and talk of rich cars drives me nuts, disgusting mold and listening to you go on and on and on about your endless adventures and telling that joke about the frog in the blender, those kids who spend their lives annoying me, being made fun of like a cock roach or a spider people who don't respect me, treat me like I'm nothing; call me stupid or spoiled brat. but I never told anybody. Certified Consultant, Carol Subramani, shares the following story from an RDI mom: RDI Consultant, Carol Subramani Our daughter was 3 yrs and 10 months when we got our first jolt - Auditory Processing deficiency, the doctors said. We were advised to begin speech therapy and occupational therapy. The 6-month follow-up consult brought "Autism" to our home and it changed our lives overnight. For the Speech delay, lack of fine and gross motor skills, and poor eye contact, the experts recommended Speech and OT again. We fervently followed through with these and behavior therapy. The Painful and Heartbreaking Learning Process "NO Mama!" I held my daughter's shivering body and insisted she used the commode - we had been out the whole day and she had controlled till she reached home and the anxiety had reached fever pitch. It was so traumatic! This was just one of the many agonizing moments that pursuing therapy brought. There was also echolalia, hand flapping, lining up objects and behavioral issues such as tantrums, hyper activity, an inability to sit at a place for long, hitting, crying without any reason, an inability to eat and chew food, problems with textures of food items, and irrational fears. Speech therapy helped her pick up the ability to talk, but it meant no meaningful conversation - just a stream of continuous and irrelevant talking and singing. All along her anxiety and stress levels kept on increasing and she developed more behavioral issues like tantrums, continuous crying, throwing objects, and a general irritable disposition. She was always in her own world and there was no meaningful interaction with anybody. Read More...
