Great Ellen :)

You are #6 to join our Challenge!

You want to 1. stay off of sugar and 2. eat more raw (I presume you mean

veggies? is that right?)

BTW - have you tried splenda? Its the new artificial sweetener, it's made

from sugar and tastes like sugar but has no ill effects on your bg! You can

cook with it and it is heavenly :)

Meenie,

I accept you challenge. I have two goals I would like to work on. Firstly,

when I went for checkups this past month, my oncologist, primary, surgeons,

and cardiologist all agreed I could increase my excercise level. While all

agreed in theory, they all had varying degrees of increase. Bottom line,

after coordinating all these opinions, I am allowed 2 minutes of hard

exercise daily with as much walking as is possible. But I have been

procrastinating even though I was the one to suggest the whole durn thing in

the first place.

So, my first goal is to maintain that 2 minutes a day of hard exercise - this

being summer and it is incredibly hot and humid in FL - I intend utilizing my

exercycle for the hard exercise and the mall for walking.

The other goal I have in mind is my monitoring my BS level better. Also,

last month - I received an excellent 3-month level of 8.7 - for me that was a

reduction of the previous 3 month reading of 14.3 - so I am very please that

with insulin, diet and exercise I have been able to reduce my level that much

in what I consider a short amount of time and given that I am still receiving

chemo which pushes my BS level up exactly 200 pts on chemo days where it

remains or decreases slowly over the next 3 days for the spots on my liver

which remain undiagnosed because of their small size. But, through all this,

and the better level, I have become very lax in home monitoring. I need to

get back to that on a regular daily basis.

So, my two challenge goals are

1) 2 minutes of hard exercise daily

2) Home BS monitoring - before and after each meal, before and after chemo

and before bed and upon arising. Oh my poor fingers again!! (Actually that's

why I stopped - to give them a rest - but now it has been much too long and I

feel out of touch with me!)

Thanks for the great idea Meenie! 3 weeks is a great length of time - that's

the length of time it takes to create a new habit.

Thanks Meenie, I will check out that site. Mike and I were talking about

that last nite. How people really don't understand how hard it is to have

this disease and watch everyone eat CHOC CAKE!!!! for example. I just want

to be able to cook with something that would help me. Shelia :)

Hi Shelia :)

Because it is so new, production is slow is the US (it's been available in

Canada for quite awhile. )

Anyway, it's available in some areas and not in others but you can order it

on the net at:

http://www.splenda.com/cgi-bin/order2?source=lifescan

I have been so delighted with it. It's the first AS I've tried that you can

cook with. Also, there is absolutely no weird aftertaste (cooked or not) -

it tastes just like sugar !

Thanks Meenie, I do apologize for not participating more of late - I do have

one bit of a problem - chemo has started to make me tired of late - although

that rough opatch too seems to be passing as long as I watch my resting

periods before, on the day of, and the day after chemo. Got so for a while I

was sleeping 20 hrs a day - better this last week or two and have been able

to participate more on my cancer list which is about 4 times more active than

this one - if you can believe that!

That's why I need to keep better track of my BGs - don't know if there's a

greater increase of late but I don't think so. It had stabilized at 200 over

and the doctors were satisfied with that since I was controlled every other

place - but you never know!

Then too I have a tendency to over do when I feel good and get myself into a

real problem.

I want to join the challenge too!

My thing to work on is exercising every day. I am at a very basic level and

can do very little exercise right now, but need to at least stretch and walk

around some every day. Some days I don't because it is too hot or I am too

tired or bored to bother with it.

Did you have the same doctor I have!?!

My situation is a bit more complicated because I have PCOS, but I got the

more sweets " . That was all I got from him.

I am currently looking for a RE to replace this endo. I have now.

Thats for sure!! With Splenda I make yummies like Cheesecake (remember I

follow a low carb diet - not low fat!) and it is to die for ! mmmmmmm

It's true that people who don't have diabetes don't know much about it. I

sure didn't before I was diagnosed - come to think of it, I didn't AFTER I

was diagnosed either!! My doctor just handed me an ADA exchange diet and

told me to " lose a little weight and watch your sugar intake " . It wasn't

until I started researching things myself that I got control of things.

My doctor never suggested I monitor myself. He never told me the effects of

carbs on my bg's - I just thought I had to cut out sugar! In fact, he told

me I was a " borderline diabetic " and I thought if I lost weight and cut out

sweets the whole thing would go away! - Guess what!! It didn't.

I've found the best defense to parties and such where there might be

tempting goodies is to take your own " legal " treats :) The people you share

them with will be amazed to see that you don't have to drool over their

chocolate cake when you can have your own goodies, AND they will come to an

understanding of how you have to manage your diet (if they are family or

close friends that you feel like getting in-depth with) .

Anyway, I hope you try the splenda and enjoy it as much as I did. I didn't

try it for a long time because the only way I could find to get it was to

order over the net and I was a bit shy of doing that. Once I tried it I was

kicking myself for not doing it earlier. I didn't really believe it would

be this good :) .

When I was on 500 mg. I did not notice a thing. Maybe a slight stomach

rumble here and there that was all. Now I am on 1,000 mg and I am noticing

some stomach problems, but they are going away with time.

It has worked great. My bg stays pretty stable, and there are virtually no

lows. Technically you are not supposed to have any lows on glucophage, but

very rarely I will have one if I don't eat regularly (Which is an issue, the

glucophage has really decreased my appetite and sometimes I have to remind

myself not to go too long without eating.) It is also helping with the PCOS

symptoms. I also take a drug called Aldactone which is a diuretic with

hormone altering properties that gives an extra boost in taking care of the

PCOS. (Which after 21 years of no treatment, I am amazed and thrilled that

this is helping)

I have noticed a lot of improvement in the 7 months I have been on it. I may

possibly be increased to 1500 mg in September. I am sure the stomach

problems will really hit then, but I will just to have to wait and see.

Still looking for a better doctor, hope to have one by the end of the month.

Wow, ! That was an endo ? Mine was a family doc. Isn't it sad that

you have to find your own answers ? Thank goodness there is a wealth of

information available here, I would hate to be without a computer.

Hi Pat!

Wow for someone who is aiming small , that's quite a list! LOL :)

Ye Ha on the line dancing - I love doing that :) it's so much fun.

But on the pollen, please report your tactics. Is it kinda like running

between the rain drops? I'd love to figure out how to avoid that icky stuff

:)

Welcome to the challenge :)

Meenie - Regarding pollen: My Dr. had prescribed Claritin for me and I had

been using it for the past 3 years during allergy season. He recommended I

take it each day through the seasons - which were most of Spring, Summer,

and a good part of Fall. I gain weight when I'm on it, feel a little weird.

This season when I went on it, my weight went up, my sneezing stopped but my

eyes ran streams. I stopped on my own and shifted to Tylenol Sinus Allergies

and am taking it once in the morning and sometimes in the afternoon if I am

going to be outdoors or at bedtime if my allergies are acting up. It's been

more comfortable for me this way and my dr. said to stick with it and throw

away the Claritin. I have less of a problem with the weight on the tylenol

sinus.

We have two cats, both of who enjoy the outdoors and coming in and rubbing

against me or lap sitting and/or demanding petting and brushing and the

pollen flies. Taking a bath after encountering the cats affection and

washing my hair help, but it's a struggle even with the air conditioner on.

The solution would be to get rid of the cats, but I couldn't bear it -

besides my husband would probably leave with them if I did.

In short, a perfect solution is not at hand. - Pat

Hey , I am on Glucopage and the first time I was on it was with a

Doctor that wasn't real good. I started on 2400mg a day! and I can tell you

it was to much. I stayed sick and lost quiet a bit of weight. My bs came

down to normal but it wasn't normal how I was feeling. I complained to my Dr

who seemed like he wasn't listening and did not want to take the time to

answer my questions so I quit going to him and quit taking the med. All this

did was hurt me more. Since then I have changed Dr. and he put me on 1000mg

a day stating before I was on to much. Yes I got sick but he told me I would

and said once it gets into the system and your body gets use to it that will

go away and it did. If I miss any I know it when I start taking it again but

it doesn't last long just hang in there. Shelia :)

My internist was the same. However, he did order me to see the diabetes

educator and she, in turn, referred me to the dietician as well. I have

since switched to an endocrinologist for my diabetes care, and I love her! I

still see the internist for other problems. My internist is really good with

respiratory problems, and I have had few problems with asthmatic bronchitis.

Just keep looking, you can find a good doc!

Does she take her glucophage with food? That helps most people.
