Guest guest
I would ask for compounded hydrocortisone. Cortef is grown on a fungus. I take all of my meds with food, so my dosing schedule may not apply, but I will tell you anyway. I take my thyroid after breakfast and after dinner. I take my estrogens, testosterone, progesterone, DHEA, and pregnenolone after lunch or at bedtime. I take a small dose of hydrocortisone at each of those dosing stations. B vitamins, C and iron after lunch. Calcium, magnesium, multi-minerals, A, D and E with bedtime snack. >> My husband and I just got back from Dr. Spurlocks, love love love this Dr. ...He found that my husband that has suffered for years has low thyroid, no adrenal function, and no seratonin. He also was low b12, low> vit d and low pregnelone. How does he space the timing of these? We will call Dr. tomorrow, but need to know if he should take any of these tonight? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Jan, thank you for the heads up on Dr. Spurlock, I could care less how much he charges, and NOT because we have money, but after all the Drs. I have been to for my thyroid and my hormoes, never have I met a Dr. so good. he is just so thorough and so understandable. Sat down and drew us a two page chart. OK, I am off my box!!!Almost!!- I started crying with relief after 23 years of watching my husband get worse and worse and now, we have hope. Thank God and thank you everybody for all the help! Please let me know about the cortef, as neither of us do well on steroids, or is this considered a steroid? Thanks and God Bless- >
Guest guest
What is Doc Fibro doing for the low seratonin? Hydrocortisone is a weak corticosteroid. If you think you have tolerance issues, ask for a very low dose. >> My husband and I just got back from Dr. Spurlocks, love love love this Dr. ...He found that my husband that has suffered for years has low thyroid, no adrenal function, and no seratonin. Guest guest
Low thyroid can sometimes cause low serotonin all by itself. If his levels don't improve with adequate thyroid you may ask the Dr. how he feels about the supplement 5-HTP, which raises serotonin more effectively than almost any 'medication', but still caution has to be used. I took it for awhile on the advise of my previous Dr., (Dr. Alavi) and should have been monitored. By the time I had serotonin levels retested on my own a year later I was 6 TIMES over the 'normal range'. I have to admit, my mood was considerably improved and I was sleeping better. I was taking about 50 mg. a night before bedtime. But...blood levels that high can be very dangerous....so lesson learned. Guest guest
I only usually add one new item or dose adjustment every two weeks or so to make sure I’m not having a reaction and tolerating it okay. I saw Jan posted about timing. Guest guest
Dr. Spurlock has said that he has a test to check for low serotonin. We discussed it, but I didn't take it. As for 5-htp, I had some serious issues with this. I ended up highly sensitive to even the smallest dose. I cannot say strongly enough how much I do not recommend 5-htp, even though many recommend it. I found that tyrosine worked much better for me. Guest guest
Addendum: Inherited Disorders Affecting Dopamine and Serotonin: Critical Neurotransmitters Derived from Aromatic Amino Acids http://jn.nutrition.org/content/137/6/1568S.full From: Rhonda Lea Kirk Fries Sent: Friday, May 18, 2012 10:48To: 'Texas_Thyroid_Groups 'Subject: RE: cortef, seratonin, and t3 There are specific enzyme deficiencies that may explain your husband’s issues (and how and when to treat them). Genetic testing can find these or you can try the hit or miss approach. (I’ve done/am doing both, because it is difficult to interest most doctors in conditions not yet named.) In the meantime, you might want to read about tetrahydrobiopterin (a/k/a BH4), MTHFR mutations (generally easily addressed by replacing folic acid with methylfolate) and dopamine beta hydroxylase deficiency. (There are more, but I name these three specifically, because they’re the ones for which *I* have bad snps, so I’m reading everything I can about them. Although the alleles I carry are insufficient for a full-blown “condition,” they are perfectly adequate for causing all kinds of trouble in one who has mutations in several different snps.) This page has a pretty good layman’s explanation of what a low level of BH4 can do: http://www.detoxpuzzle.com/bh4.php There are additional link-outs that might also be helpful. (Although there’s no mention of aspartame, a low level of BH4 probably explains why some people develop symptoms from ingesting it, even if they don’t have PKU.) I have accumulated scads of information, but this is a complex subject, and it’s one I’m only beginning to learn about. (I just don’t have the background to understand it easily, unfortunately). Guest guest
I ditto your comment on Dr. Spurlock...was told I have reverse T3 and after struggling on the new Armour, I am finally feeling way better on the compounded T3. Even with an increase needed, I am still better than I have been in 3 years. > > My husband and I just got back from Dr. Spurlocks, love love love this Dr. ....He found that my husband that has suffered for years has low thyroid, no adrenal function, and no seratonin. Guest guest
Thanks Jan..I'm getting my increase in the mail today and a little anxious because I feel so good where I'm at even though labs showed I'm under the bottom ranges. I think the fungus med might have blocked absorption--just guessing. I really like the doctor and his whole staff!!! So glad you said you were going to him him--thankyou!!!!! > > > > > > My husband and I just got back from Dr. Spurlocks, love love love > this Dr. ...He found that my husband that has suffered for years has low > thyroid, no adrenal function, and no seratonin.
