Congratulations! It is a great feeling. Just curious why you test at 3 hrs.

and not at 2?

I am in the process of taping it for Toni and I am loving it. Reading it for

the second time and out loud really makes it sink in for me. I have others

who have volunteered to read and tape it too, but I am being bad and selfish

so far.

<< NO FRUIT? Wow, but it working!>>

When I first stopped my 1/2 banana for breakfast I had my first low blood

sugar reaction. I was on Glyburide at the time. This while I was in the

midst of reading Bernstein's Diabetes Solution for the first time. A light

bulb went off in my head. Dang, this no fruit makes sense! Do I miss it?

Yes, but I also love my readings around 100 more.

Today, 3 hours post meal, I had my first normal reading (117).

I have obtained Bernstein's book, and it has been a learning experience.

NO FRUIT? Wow, but it working!

I wish someone had told me 5 years ago that a type II diabetic CAN have

normal fasting readings. I did, and stopped monitoring cause I thought

I was cured. (HA HA).

Thanks for the support from these two groups!

That depends . For me I eat no more than 40 grams max. a day. I

usually eat less. I pretty much follow Bernstein's WOE (way of eating) and

with his plan you have 6 grams at breakfast, 12 at lunch and 12 at dinner for

a total of 30 grams a day. Believe me I have tried to have more but my blood

sugars start to rise and I like to keep them 85-105. Some folks on this list

have 100 grams a day and are OK with it. Also some are on insulin or meds

that lower their blood sugar so they can have more carbs.

If you go for total Bernstein he suggests 6-12-12 -- that is, six carbs for

breakfast, 12 each for lunch and dinner. This is pretty stringent - you need

to be REALLy dedicated to follow this. And it requires a lot of special

foods. But it works. A lot of us have modified it. Probably 100 carbs a

day is doable without too much sacrifice and you can still get results from

it. If you can cut out breads, pasta, rice in addition to sweet stuff and

concentrate on protein, salads, veggies, cheese, nuts...you'll do okay. Keep

good notes of what you eat and check your BGs one and two hours after eating

and you'll find what works for you pretty quickly. Vicki

What special foods are you talking about Vicki?

, every one is different. the thing is to do some research, read

some books, and pick a plan for yourself. In the meanwhile, one rule is

don't eat anything white (rice, potatoes, bread, grits) to start with, read

all labels, and maybe start with 100 carbs or so until you find a plan you

like. Eat and test your blood sugar 1 1/2 hours after you eat, and see the

results of what you ate. I'm afraid there is no easy answer here. YMMV,

your mileage may vary, which means all our bodies and diabetes are

different. What does your dietician or diabetes educator say?

I don't remember offhand and I don't have time to check my copy but I seem to

remember ...(at this point Vicki makes quick run to bookcase, pulls out

Bernstein and leafs briefly thru end recipe section)....well, gosh golly, I

was wrong! No special foods! Mea culpa. Vicki

, I've been thinking about you. You sounded pretty frantic in your

post of January 31st, and I've been hoping that you are now getting a better

handle on your diabetes management.

A pretty good rule of thumb, I think, is to try to hold the carbohydrate

intake beneath 100 grams a day, and to try to limit it to no more than 35

grams per meal. (Some diabetics can eat 150 grams a day and do all right,

while others find they must keep their intake down around 50 grams. Frequent

testing will tell you what your body can handle.)

You may be recalling posts from online ketogenic-level low-carb groups,

which advocate several special foods. There are commercial products that

offer lower-carb versions of many items. They can be found by joining a

low-carb group, or doing a web search using " low carb* " in quotation marks,

with the asterisk included, at any good search engine, such as

http://www.altavista.com For those who wish to reduce their carbohydrate

intake to the ketogenic level - to place themselves in fat-burning mode if

they are obese, or because their pancreas function is so compromised - every

gram of carbohydrate matters. Some ketogenic eaters consume as few as 10-20

grams of carbohydrates daily.
