I have been able to find success with steamed Moo Goo Gai Pan or other

steamed vegie/protein dish. My favorite restaurant will serve chinese green

beans, bok choy, mushrooms and zucchini steamed with my choice of prawns or

chicken. I eat at chinese restaurants 2-3 times/week and my last HbA1c was

5.1.

Did they also do an A1c at the same time? It sounds like they did not if

they are ready to say you are not diabetic because of the fasting 92. My

advice-get back to your Dr. and have them do an A1c. That shows your average

for the past 3 months. With the readings you were having after the Chinese

dinner there is no way that you would have a low Alc. If they give you any

slack mention PATIENCE ASSISTANCE. Those two works work wonders. My

gynecologist is the one who ordered my blood work. Maybe you could have a

better chance getting it through them.

As far as Chinese food, I usually have beef with broccoli with no problems

and the egg drop soup. It has the corn starch and sugar but I do OK with

it. I do not have it with rice though. I have heard of others that ask for

their food with more meat than veges, stir fried and any sauces on the side.

Good for you to keep testing to see what you can and can't handle! = )

Hi Barb,

Yeah I plan on making an appt. next week. They just had a receptionist call

and say you don't have diabetes your fasting blood sugar was 92. I asked

what the 2 hour reading was and she said all I know is your fasting was 92 so

you are fine. The way I found out I had the high sugar is my cat that is

14.5 yrs. old was diagnosed with diabetes. So we went out and bought a

moniter for her and I started practicing it on myself. After dinners I was

getting readings anywhere from 180 to 240. So I made an appt. to get the

GTT. I have had lots of symtoms for awhile but I always just thought it was

hormones. I often drink a half gallon of water in the middle of the night

because I am so thirsty. I don't know why it never occurred to me that it

might be diabetes or glucose intolerance. Anyway I will go into Kaiser next

week and tell them the readings I have been getting on my Bayer Glucometer

Elite. It doesn't surprise me with Kaiser that you have to be really high

before they say you might have a problem.

Thanks for listening..

The chinese restaurants use sugar and cornstarch in lots of stuff.

, you need to fight Kaiser on this. Get a letter and scrips for all

the support stuff (strips, meds, insulin, whatever) from your doc and all

the background stuff you can. Fasting bg's aren't necessarily an accurate

diagnostic tool anymore. Kaiser should not be allowed to get away with

this!!!!! IMHO, of course :-)

Chinese food also raises my bg levels much higher than most other

things. It think that it might be because it is not possible to measure

the protein content in the servings at a restaurant. When I make stuff

at home I know exactly what goes into it and know that one fourth of

what I made has so much protein and so much carbs. We only eat Chinese

out occasionally, so it isn't a big problem. Normally two hour PP

readings are 120 or less. When I eat Chinese out they are usually

around 140 or 145.

I don't think that the problem is your restaurant.

Kaiser diagnosed my diabetes when my fasting blood sugar was 246. There

was no doubt. It hasn't been that high since I started checking in

April. Only one reading since that time was over 200, a couple around

180 and all the rest were 160 or below.

My understanding from literature I got from Kaiser is that two fasting

readings over 126 or any two readings over 200 on a random test plus

symptoms of diabetes mean you have it. This is from the Introduction to

Diabetes sheet that they give you when you go for the classes. I found

the Diabetes Center at my Kaiser Medical Center to be wonderful and they

provide as much support as you need. I have been seeing a CDE that is a

Physician's Assistant and I FAX her my bg readings every two weeks and

she calls me and we discuss them. She also saw me when I was diagnosed,

three months later and now every six months. She is the one that gave

me the prescriptions for the meter and the lancets and test strips.

Incidentally, I just got a new box of test strips and they are now

free. They don't even charge the normal $5.00 charge that my health

insurance normally requires for prescriptions. I also attended the

classes at the Medical Center for explaining diabetes and went to see a

dietitian who gave me a diet that has worked wonders. If you are

getting readings of 180 and 240, plus are having symptoms you probably

have diabetes but an HbA1c test will tell quickly.

:) Erwin

PS: If you need any info about Kaiser's Diabetes Care, ask me and I

will fill you in as best I can.

Chinese food dishes have to be chosen carefully because most of the heavy

sauces (and almost all the white sauces) are made mainly with corn starch

and pan drippings (or whatever they call it in Chinese cooking). That's

probably what's sending your bg through the roof. Stick to things with very

little sauce, lots of veggies, and very little rice or noodles.

I love Chinese food, and we often go to a local buffet where they serve lots

of stir fried veggies and meat without sauces.

Alternatively, you could try some Vietnamese food. Generally, it's much

lighter on the sauces. Just stay away from those (wonderful) noodle soups.

Hi there ,

I have pretty much had to same experiences as Elva at eating at a Chinese

restaurant. I have a favorite that has a great buffet and I am just so

" picky " about what I choose to eat. I really " pig out " when I go there and

my blood sugar is just fine when I check it. No more than usual after

eating anything. I don't take anything that even looks like it has sweet

sauce and mostly choose the veggies and meat. I eat a piece of cantalope

for desert and if I'm feeling especially hungry for something sweet I get

just a little bit of ice cream. It come's out of a machine and it isn't

very sweet at all......Just cold. I always drink ice water with lemon in

it. I've found it's best if I don't order from the menu. Only eat buffet

so I can SEE what I'm eating.

Lots of luck hon!

Elva,

We're still waiting to see what is a " chicken ball " . I'm sorry but you just

got my giggle box turned over. It brought back some very funny memories.

Such as: When I was first married, my husband and I went to visit his

grandparents (my first time to meet them) they were German and couldn't

speak a word of English but my husband could understand them. They were

just so upset because I was so " skinny " . They kept trying to get me to

eat....offering me all kinds of unidenifiable objects. My husband told me

that I was hurting their feelings by rejecting their hospitality. I finally

agreed to eat " something " that I thought looked like it might be tasty. The

problem was that the more I chewed it .....the bigger it got! When I

discovered it was calf tongue...I had to run outside and upchuck all of it

.....plus everything else I had eaten that day. NOW, I don't eat anything if

I can't identify it.

LOLROF. Isn't that what Teri said......(Laughing out loud rolling on the

floor)?

Well, I guess I will answer my own question, sort of. The way you sounded I

thought you knew something different! = )

According to Corrine T. Netzers The Complete Book of Food Counts:

Arrowroot 1/4 teaspoon has 0 carbs

Cornstarch 1 Tablespoon has 7 carbs

This is not to say that arrowroot has none if you were using one tablespoon

of it though. Just how the book lists their values.

Re the Chinese meal and high BG reading debate:

IMHO, it's the rice, which has a very high glycemic index. The next to last

time I had Chinese food, I ate the whole serving of rice. An hour later, my BG

reading was over 200. -- The *only* time it's been that high since my

diagnosis. A week or two later, we went back to the same place. I had the

same thing - chicken and broccoli, only this time I didn't eat more than a

spoonful or two of the rice. The BG reading at 1 hour was 97.

Give it a try. Check yourself with and without the rice. See for yourself if

this works out for you. (And remember: YMMV.)

Our Friday night girls night out group has argued this back and forth. The

" Old style control " people try to blame the " high fat " content of the food. I

disagree strongly with this. I really do believe the new style low carb -- or

at least low/no *refined* carbs -- WOE.

A check of Rick Mendosa's Glycemic Index pages turns up the following:

>

> Wallace Yokoyama, a research chemist working for the U.S. Department of

And the actual Glycemic Index figures of various rice varieties themselves:

P. S. Since nobody else has defined chicken balls, they are bits of chicken

meat rolled in breading and fried. BTW - what are Prairie oysters? And a

calf fry? (I *have* heard of a pig roast.)

Oops. Looks like Elva beat me to it. I'm really behind on my mail this

week-end. Been busy, and a lost hone line yesterday didn't help any, either.

Rice has oodles of carbs, for one thing. And many of the Oriental dishes

contain sweeteners and thickeners that are carby. If you stick with the

Oriental veggies and meats in a dish that is not sweet at all, you can

perhaps do quite well. Any of the battered items will be a problem though.

At home, the frozen Oriental veggies are an excellent choice. Combine them

with just about any lean meat for a nutritious, low-carb meal. In

restaurants, we are eating " a pig in a poke " - don't really know what they

are adding to the dishes.

Although I have heard from some who are happy with their Kaiser, there

surely have been many bad reports involving them lately. It sounds as if

they are just grasping for a reason to dump another potentially-expensive

diabetic off their list. A glucose tolerance test will always " prove we are

diabetic " . I hope you have another group to turn to, as Kaiser does not

appear to be playing straight with you.
