Low-Carb & YMMV

I think I may have learned something, but don't know yet, about the digestion

situation. For years, I have suffered from Irritable Bowel. (Yuck) Lots of

pain, etc. After I went on LC, I had one attack early on, and none since.

This affliction has been with me almost as long as I can remember. Now, on

LC,(since May '99) no problems. 2 Salads a day. Lots of veggies, all the

stuff that those of us who have been there know about. BUT there is no wheat

or gluten in the diet. I feel fine. For what it's worth...

I too was on Tum's daily. Many nights with heartburn and where it would come

into your throat burning and having to get up and sleep sitting up. Since

low-carbing I have not had any more heartburn problems. I thought it was

from eliminating all the sugars, fruits, and flour (starch) products.

I don't know enough about food allergies, but I keep wondering if you have

celiac problems ... intolerant of products containing gluten? How are you

handling wheat and other grains? There are support groups and lots of info

out there. But then, on the other hand, you would have mentioned having a

problem with wheat, wouldn't you? < thinking ... > The tea comment

befuddles me. Can't think of what tea would contain, other than tannic acid.

Does it seem to you that it is only acid foods that tear you up? If you

don't have sufficient stomach acid available to handle the food you eat, it

attempts to pass through your digestive tract in undigested form, creating

all kinds of uproar. Could that be it? You are taking so many antacids for

your present troubles that you don't have enough to process the fibrous or

acid-type foods you try to eat?

That is a really common problem. I can recall some years ago, in fact, that

" Consumers Report " did a study of antacids and recommended people use

Rolaids and not Tums, because essentially Tums had too much of a product

that was too effective at wiping out stomach acid, and that is an unhappy

situation for your stomach to be in.

Many low-carbers report their indigestion improving, because meat has less

fiber than grains and vegetables. Some natural products you can try that

would give you bulk include freshly-ground flaxseed and unsweetened

psylllium husk (that is the product they use in many bulking-agent-type

laxatives - but those commercial products are sweetened).

Hi Erwin,

I also think it is neat that we are communicating all over the world. I

love hearing where each of you live.

I would like to mention that the greater the percentage of protein on my

plate, the less I crave carbs. I have been trying to add protein and was

looking for ideas, hence the request for the cookbook.

I started having eggs for breakfast instead of oatmeal and toast (as the

dietician had recommended) and when I got the results of my cholesterol test

it back had gone up and again my doctor wanted to put me on pills.

I asked him to give me six more months to get it down, he said he would give

me three. I try to eat salad once every two weeks or so but I pay for it

with gastritis for a whole week.

I have noticed an improvement since Sulcrate has been added to my meds.

That's why I am brave enough to try the salad...lol... I keep hoping that

one of these days I will be able to have a salad or an apple with out having

the pain.

I miss my cup of tea the most. I would pay $100.00 for a good cup of tea

without having to pay for it with gastritis for a week.

Does anyone else out there have gastro problems? If so how do you manage

eating low-carb, or high-protein?

I believe that the grain allergy, particularly to wheat, is very widespread

and causes far more problems than is currently recognized. My sister with

the severe rheumatoid arthritis and gout once did one of those advanced

allergy studies where she wore a paper gown in a sealed room and they

removed all substances including food, then introduced items one at a time.

She registered allergic to basically all the grains.

I have read that as many as 80 percent of moden humans are intolerant of our

diet that is so high in processed grains. A high-grain diet is, after all, a

feedlot diet, which is used to fatten cattle prior to slaughter. And I once

encountered a fascinating study which explained symptoms of cattle who

reacted adversely to a feedlot diet ... they would become lethargic,

depressed, and if not removed from the grains, they would actually die. It

was eery reading the report, because the observed symptoms sound so very

much like what we humans report suffering when we stuff ourselves with

processed grains such as instant rice and pasta.

Hi Faye,

I've got gastro problems -- I've just spent four months with severe acid

stomach problems, and loss of weight from it. I just started counting carbs

instead of fat about 3 weeks ago, and for two of the those weeks I have had

a cold, so I'm not sure yet that I'm on track. But I am starting to notice

less acid build up with the switch to lower carbs. (I did check for

ketones, nothing there, several times). I think the changes in carbs may be

helping - it's going slightly better. But I haven't been able to eat fruit

for months, or spices, or tea, or anything carbonated. Bland land. I did a

salad the other night and was fine.

My husband has been low carbing with me. He has had gastric problems for years,

drinking bottles of the " pink stuff " and on meds. Since eating low carb, he has

not needed any meds or pink stuff (except if he cheats on pizza). It has become

apparent that he is very sensitive to wheat. For years he ate donuts, mac &

cheese and a host of other carby foods to help " soak up the acid " . Now if he

eats

those things, he bloats up and is back on the " pink stuff " .

I would love to get my hands on that report... I bet it's out there on the net

someplace... I'm off to surf ;)

My boss' family is all wheat intolerant to one extent or another. She has

rheumatoid arthritis and many allergies, and she becomes quite immobile when she

eats wheat. Her children are adopted (Peruvian) and if her son has any wheat

whatsoever, he becomes quite ADD for several days. Although wheat does not

affect their gastrointestinal health... it affects them in other profound ways.

Absolutely the same for me. I have not had any indigestion or problems

with heartburn since low carbing. I used to have a bagel for breakfast

daily and then the heartburn would set in about 11:00. Not only has it

helped my BG but my indigestion as well.
