If nobody else wants the large navy sweatshirt, I'll take it. But now it's lecture time... Up from behind the keyboards, bend and reach. When this thread started, I worried about the sizes being mentioned. I see the same problem with some of my coworkers and those in the comm centers nearby. I've seen too many in for by-pass surgery in their 30s or worse, AMI at 40. One of the benefits of working in public safety is free use of the department's gym and most health clubs give huge discounts for public safety (Golds, for example). We all need to take advantage of those opportunities. It's not just how long you live but the quality of life. Get up an hour early or stay for half an hour and shower when you get home. Pump some iron. Walk. Jog. Run. Swim. Row. You'll feel better, look better, won't get sick as often... It's hard starting. It's harder restarting. I fell off my roof 3 years ago, broke my shoulder, spent a year in rehab', and I still can't bench my body weight... but I'm getting close again. When I get off work, I head down to the weight room (we don't have a full gym) for an hour and leave feeling great. I'll never be in the same shape I was when I was in the Army. I loved running circles around the 20- year-olds. They hated the days when I lead the physical training formations, even when I was over 40. I'm slowing down but still kicking, planning to compete in the 'Grand Master' (over 50) class next year for powerlifting. My daughter made me do it. She looks almost too good in a bathing suit even though she weighs 170... but it's all muscle. Most people who just look at her guess her weight as 125. She's the current Virginia record holder for WPF (World Powerlifting Federation) in the squat for under 181 pound women and took second in the High School, Teenage, and Junior Women's divisions at the Nationals in Fort Hood, TX earlier this year. She benches 60K (132 lb) and squats 110 (244 lb), plays soccer, and is going cannoeing with me on Friday. If old men and teenage girls can do it, so can you! 50's not old if you're a... Guest guest
Tree, I only wish someone had given me that lecture 8 years ago. I was able to walk run and exercise then, just didn't want to. Oh yeah, I walked on the treadmill every now and then, but sitting and reading was my preferred hobby. Now I have no choice. Left ankle, right knee....don't work. I have taken shots of about everything the orthopedic surgeon can throw at me, and still, no go. The Synvex (sp?) shots did help my left knee a whole lot, but it looks like the right one is going to have to be replaced. Oh, to dance again somewhere other than my dreams. Our job is a stagnant one, so all of you who have the ability ...LISTEN TO TREE!!! Get off your duffs, PLEASE, and just take a short walk. Tomorrow, add just a little more, and so forth. Do it while you are physically able, cause believe me, you never know when the ability will be taken from you. Done lecturing. Lyn magik@... Guest guest
I remember someone on the list mentioning physical assessments for dispatchers. Does anyone have that information? Thanks, Dan Koenig DKoenig@...
Guest guest
I use the Biblical approach to exercise. 1 4:8-9 (8) For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come. (9) This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance. (The Holy Bible, New King Version, Copyright 1992 by , Inc.)
Guest guest
I've been saying that if I do get the dispatching job I will join a health club. Can't really afford it until then. I know if I sit at my job I will need to do something. If I'm home I won't exercise properly. Tammy
Guest guest
So, let me get this straight. In 1992, , Inc., got a copyright on the Bible? Even if it is the " new King Version " , I'm a little weak on this. Maybe they should call it the Version, then maybe I could understand. So, if someone quotes Jesus from their version, they could be sued for copyright infringement. Let's see, " And Jesus sayith go forth and protecteth the Word. Hire an abundance of lawyers and sueth often. " Get outta here.
