That's usually when they are kicking in good. Actually I take Percocets, and they can get me through anything. As far as them zipping you in too quick. All you have to do is talk in a normal voice and tell them you need to come back out. They can hear whatever you say, and they HAVE to take you out if you get upset. Also, ask them to tell you when each individual test is finished and how long the next test is. Usually each test is anywhere from 3-12 minutes. It really breaks up the time and before you know it YOU'RE DONE!! I'm right there with you about stressing over an MRI days before your appointment. They are horrible!! yes..there is a hole at the other end. The last one I had wasn't too bad because they somehow attached a mirror to the top and adjusted it so that I could see out of the tube and see the technician. You might want to mention that too. You can call ahead of time too, this way the sedative will have more time to work by the time you go in. Use the headphones (if they have them). Use positive visualization before the appointment- imagine yourself being in the scanner, comfortable, relaxed and confident. I agree with keeping your eyes closed, it helped me tremendously. Also, where I go they put headphones on you tuned to your favorite radio station. They also have cool air blowing in from somewhere. Guest guest
To follow up on what Tina, the Queen of MRI said - The first MRI I had was in one part of the hospital 2 years ago. It was a piece of cake (although I was a little bit chilly), and I thought they'd always be a piece of cake... but I was wrong, and this is why: the second one I had was in an older room, and although they did give me headphones with music (one of the songs, and I am not making this up, was about having a hole in one's head!), they did *not* give me a mirror to see the techs (which I'd had the first time), nor did they talk to me, telling me how long each test would be, and asking me if I was okay. They were totally different experiences. In the first one I had no fear at all, it went by extremely quickly, and I didn't feel enclosed. The second seemed to take forever, I thought I was going to die or scream or something, and I felt completely closed in. SO, next time I have an MRI, I am going to specify that I need a mirror and I need someone telling me in advance how long each test will take. I won't be able to stand it otherwise. Or a tranquilizer will be fine, as an alternative to my panicking, if they can't meet my needs in any other way. Good luck, I'm sure you'll be great... just make sure to assert your needs. ------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have a major problem with MRIs. The last 2 times I have had an MRI, my doctor prescribed Valium. He has me take 1 pill 1 hour before the test, and 1 more pill 30 minutes before the test. It really helped me, and I was " out of it " for the entire test. Guest guest
I try to imagine outdoor scenes. Like a football field with lots of open space. Or a beautiful summer day with puffy clouds. If you have a kid who plays little league ball or something think of memories watching them in an open area or something like that. It helps me deal with that darn little tube. I always think about how toothpaste must feel all scrunched up in there. Guest guest
I'm having a MRI done this coming Friday and other tests that I'm not sure what they are for and I am claustafobic[that doen't look like it is spelt right but you know what I mean]. The last one freaked me out and I'm starting to get worked up about it already. My hubby has to have a hernia and tumor fixed on Monday so I guess I'll worry about him and try not to think about Friday.
