Hi All!

I have been following this thread with great interest. I read and then deleted

an earlier post from someone who said something about Diet Rite Cola having

Splenda (or at least a safer sugar) in it? Did I read it wrong? I went to the

store yesterday and looked at all the Diet Rite labels and they all said they

contained Aspartame. Right now, all I drink is water or unsweetened iced tea

and that is getting rather old.

I need to be particularly careful right now as chemo is shooting my BG's all

over the place!! The doctor has increased my insulin, but even with exercise

and the increased dosage of insulin, the lowest it has been is 180 the day

after chemo. Not bad, considering that usually the day after it was

approaching 400, fasting - actually all day for that matter. The good thing is

that the chemo is making me better and stronger this time instead of sicker

and weaker which they say is a very good sign for which I am truly thankful.

No side effects from the chemo at all - except a little arthritis in the legs

now and again.

And my appetite is so good! All I want to do is eat. So, I could really use

some advice here, guys. On the one had this is great, the appetite I mean -

considering chemo and all - on the other - it is not good for my BG's. Talk

about the old proverbial Rock!!

Thanks Ann for the info on the Diet RC and the advice. I never use aspartame.

What I need is more variety to pick from because I think it's the fact that

I'm so darn hungry all the time. It's the carb intake - I try to stick to

salads, complex carbs and proteins, but sometimes that is not always possible.

I feel, too, that I need to eat more too to compensate for the effects of the

chemo killing the good cells along with the bad - I have managed to maintain

my weight - no loss or gain. It wouldn't be so bad if I didn't need to play

both ends of the field at once - this balancing act between chemo and diabetes

is no fun!! On the one had they tell you EAT, EAT, EAT and on the other hand

- WATCH IT!!

I love chinese and find that I crave it on chemo days - probably because the

ginger is good for nausea. It doesn't seem to do anything to my BG's - I know

this because I have it during the week when I level out again and my BG's are

not elevated that much when I eat the chicken " fried " rice. I stay away from

the lo-mein and egg rolls, etc as they REALLY are bad!! But, the broth from

WonTon soup is excellent for me. I skip the noodle part and just drink the

broth and whatever other vegetables are in it.

I've also discovered that 's Classic Greek Pitas are very good for me.

I'm a label reader BIGTIME and skip anything that lists more than 50g of carb

and 0 Sugar - or at least try to! I also try to skip anything that lists more

than 25% fat. Now, this may seem high to some, but my nutritionist is

concerned that I am NOT getting enough fat - because I totall have eliminated

ALL of it from the rest of my diet - so she has told me to deliberately have

some everyday. I am a little fussy about that part, but try to adhere to what

she says, - that's why the " fried " rice works for me.

PASTA or a large amt of bread (more than one slice) - a definite no-no for me

- except for the Pita Bread and 100% whole grain breads.

Chile Con Carne is a must have - it really brings the BG's down!!

Haven't tried low-carbing - by that I assume you mean eating as little carbs

as possible - I try to stick to High Complex carbs though. The oncology

doctors have stressed maintaining my weight as is - I have lost weight - but

only at the times when I am allowed to and can do it *easily* as long as I

don't have chemo - with chemo, it is important to maintain because of the

strain it puts on the system killing good along with bad cells. Problem is my

cancers caused the loss of my left kidney and most of my pancreas last year -

thank God it was two different kinds and had not spread!! - But, now they

found three pinpoint spots on my liver - not good - but so small they can't

even biopsy - so chemo for me again! I feel better and stronger each week

which is great and encouraging to the doctors, but on the day after chemo, my

BG starts out at almost 400 and remains just about there all day long -

sometimes I have tested 6 times a day - I was getting so nervous about it -

and then, I backed off because I was getting so stressed. The next day it

drops another 100 pts and the next another 100 pts until about 4 days after is

just about in normal range again, but by then, it is almost time to repeat the

process. So, I know, and the doctors have told me, that the chemo is causing

the problem and I need to get my insulin adjusted which I am monitoring now

for a few days so he can make a determination of how much more to prescribe.

So far, he took me off precose, so far (the only pill I was able to digest and

not have a side affect) and put me on humalin twice a day - 12 u in the AM and

16 in the PM. Now, he wants to put me on 70-30 Insulin but is waiting to see

what figures I give him these next two weeks.

The thing is because I am feeling so good these past 6 weeks I have been on

chemo again (do you think a new grandbaby born last Sunday has anything to do

with it!!?? <G>) that I think I could try to lose a little even though on

chemo but am afraid to take any chances - can you blame me?!

So I try to eat as much as I can and try to work it all in to please all my

doctors. But for drinks which I have to consume a lot more of because of the

dry tissue problem with chemo, I stick to lots and lots of water and sometimes

an unsweetened iced tea when we are out.

I have Type II diabetes and the funny thing is all my life I never even liked

sweets!! How's that for ironic?

It's enough to drive a crazy person sane!!

The difference is Diet Rite is NOT Diet RC. While they are bottled by the

same company the AS is different. Call your local bottler and ask about

Diet RC Cola.

I should have read your message all the way through. You didn't say if you

are type I or II. I suspect you are type II. Try lowering your carb intake

and getting completely off asparatame. Monitor yourself as you make the

I heard that about diet rite, also about RC Cola... but here they both are

sweetened with aspartame. Even Tabb (which I FINALLY found at Teeter

, has been re-done and now has aspartame in it <sniffle>)

, I'm sorry you're having to do the chemo! Have you tried low carbing

while on it? I don't know your medical condition or if low carb would be ok

for you... maybe you should ask your doc or your oncologist.

Okay,

I found diet RC cola with Splenda at the store. It is better than Aspartame

as far as no side effects so far, but it still leaves a nasty taste in my

mouth. It is sweeter than real sugar, and leaves a very sweet bitter taste in

my mouth. The soda is noticeably sweeter than a regular soda. I don't have

much of a sweet tooth, and a regular soda is pushing the sweet limit for me

anyway. Maybe it will be better in other products?

And, I was all jazzed hoping something would finally taste like the real

thing! Blech!

That is a good idea, and I will try it. I left the glass sitting on my desk

and did some sewing and came back, the ice had melted and watered it down, and

it was not quite so sweet.

I'll pick up some club soda and try it out.....

The Diet RC Cola formula has been changed to using Splenda as the sweetener

but many areas the stores are still selling the older products first. You

just have to wait for the newer products to get stocked or ask the manager

of the store to push to get the newer stuff from the wearhouse.

A diabetic on Chemo is very hard. A neighbor of mine had that problem a few

years ago. What finally happened was that he changed to insulin and

controlled his higher BGs with the insulin using many injections a day. He

then ate more of the food that he needed to help rebuild the good cells and

finally his cancer went into remission. The last two years there has not

been any signs of a reoccurrence either. He is still under the tight control

that he had with the insulin and still takes 4 to 6 injections a day. That

is where I first got the idea of tight control with multiple injections.

Then I joined a research team on the same program. I have found it is the

best way for me to live as normal life as I can. Actually my diabetes is in

such good control that it takes a second and third place in the list of

medical problems that I work on taking care of . My heart problems are now

number one.

Sounds like you have very sensitive taste buds. I have not found any after

taste and yes it is a little sweeter but not that bad. I have found that it

is a great sweetener and do not believe that there will be as many side

effects. Nothing came up in the study of the products as well as the heavy

use in Canada did not really show anything bad.

Now that we finally have something good you know there will be people that

will find a way to find some little thing wrong with it and then try to get

it banned.

If you will taste the regular RC you will find that it is considerably

sweeter than coke or pepsi. I think that is the problem. I use splenda in

a lot of things and get no aftertaste. Perhaps it is the sweet taste that

bothers you since yo said you don't have a sweet taste. I for one hope that

coke and pepsie go to this soon.

So glad to hear another point of view! I trust my dietician's advice, and in

my mind (because I have taken nutrition classes) I KNEW she was right; but,

everyone keeps saying you need to cut down on fat. So much to remember! :>)

Your body needs fats, proteins and carbohydrates.

I'm on a low carbo diet and you get all you need from veggies and fruits.

There was a time when man didn't know how to process food... he could pick

it and eat it, or he could kill it and eat it and that is the diet that was

meant for us.

Also some fat is actually need for the heart. My heart doctor has me on a

diet where I eat 10 to 15 grams of fat a day. Mostly in the form of olive

oil and fat from chicken or fish. I can once a month eat red meat as long as

it is a lean cut. Of course I also eat pizza but I have chicken and

vegetables on it only.

Same thing with carbs. The body needs some complex carbs in order for

everything to work properly. In most people this is around 25 to 35 grams of

carbs a day. I tried much lower than that and ran into trouble with heart

rates and rhythm Will never go very low carb again.

How low did you go with your carbs, Bill?

On the induction phase of Atkins I have 20 grams a day, and that is only for

2 weeks... after that I begin to increase it.

The older form of Atkins back in the 80s was 10 grams of carbs a day. Since

many people had problems with it he moved the carbs up. I seem to do the

best with 35 grams of carbs a day and my BG levels are very tight. I keep

them in the 70 to 85 range and hardly ever go over 100. At 110 I start to

have chest pain and over 150 it is hospital time. I also do not eat

breakfast so that allows a few extra carbs at another meal. I normally only

eat two meals a day and then a late night snack of a small fruit or PB and

crackers.

There are two cheesecake recipes, one is baked and one is unbaked. I

greatly prefer the baked one myself :)

Here they are - baked one first :)

Cheese Cups 12 servings 2.8 g. carbs each

5 eggs ( 5 g.)

2 8 oz pkgs cream cheese, softened. (16 g.)

7 tsp Splenda (3.5 g)(I used more splenda than this - judge by tasting

the " batter " )

1/2 t. vanilla (.5 g.)

line muffin cups with paper cups. Preheat oven to 300°, beat

ingredients until smooth. Pour into

cups. (you can also make this in a pie pan - don't use a springform - it'll

leak without a crust!) Bake 40 min. Remove and cool 5 min. Center will

fall, fill dip

in the center with the

following:

1 c. sour cream (7.5 g)

1/4 t. vanilla (.2 g)

1 3/4 t. Splenda (1 g)

return to oven for 5 min. Cool and refrigerate overnight.

12 servings 2.8g. carbs each

And here is the no-bake one:

No-carb Cheesecake (almost!)

1 sm. pkg. SF jello, any flavor

2 8-oz. pkgs. cream cheese (room temp.)

(16 carb)

1 tbsp. vanilla extract

6 pkts. artificial sweetener (6 carb)

1/2 c. boiling water

1/2 c. cold water

------------------------------------------------------------

Mix boiling water with jello to dissolve.

Add remaining ingredients. Refrigerate

until set.

Servings: 8

Carbohydrates/serving: 3

You can also follow the directions in the non flavored knox gelatin box and

just substitute splenda for sugar.

I also make a mean little quickie dessert occasionally with 3 oz of cream

cheese in a mug. Nuke in the microwave for 30 seconds. Add 1 Tblspn of

cream, stir well til smooth. Add 2 pkts of splenda and a dash of vanilla

extract.

You can also use other flavored extracts, or a dash of DaVinci's SF syrups

(I have chocolate, ammaretto, and cherry - these do have aspartame but it's

the only thing with aspartame I use at all and only use a small amount)

found the Splenda version of Ocean Spray Cranberry & Cran-Grape drinks...at

Albertson's...
