Guest guest
<< Please, 3rd shifters, give me some support here!!!! Tell me how you love it and tip the scales!! >> Do it Lyn........ this from a gal who teethed on the " graveyard " shift and still loves it!!!! It's so much more quieter internally, and externally after about 230am you don't have to deal with the BS calls....... until something happens to turn things around or something better comes along (Like Ed McMahon knocking on your door) give it a shot.... working with someone else makes it go faster. And so what if there's paper work --- it's something to do and will most likely give you a boost that you're actually making headway instead of back peddeling. Of course, check with the hubby to make sure he can survive 6 months of a cold bed at night!!!! I'd hate for you to trade one heck hole just to open another can of worms! Guest guest
Lyn.. I say go for it. I mean what do you have to lose. Besides, the stress seems to be cut in half. I say give it a try and see what happens.
Guest guest
I have a dispatcher now that was having trouble keeping up with the traffic on evening shift. He doesn't multitask too well, but since his focus is on the officers on the street no one complained. Everytime something changed in dispatch, he threw a fit, even if it helped him out in the long run. He decided to move to nights and since it is usually only busy during the first part, and primarily radio traffic (without too many phone calls) this has worked out much better for him. Instead of having to deal with people coming in and out, radio traffic, AND phone traffic - he is able to focus on the radio traffic pretty much exclusively. He does feel like he is isolated on nights, but I believe that that is what would be perfect for you. However, if you go to 3rd shift until things are straight in your department, you might be there for a LOOOONNNNNNNNGGGGGGG time.... :-) annette hallmark ahallmark@... Guest guest
>>Please, 3rd shifters, give me some support here!!!! Tell me how you love it and tip the scales!!<< Haven't worked what we call graveyard in years but it used to be fun. Couple hours of flat out flying calls, hour or 2 of medium business, and 3 or 4 hours to read/study/eat/I personally crochetted/or whatever. No brass, no bosses xcept supervisor who was basically busy w/paperwork all night, officers came to visit cuz there was actually time to talk. If you are married or have children or both, when you get home in the morning they are either gone or leaving shortly. It was a calm and peaceful life. For the record, tho, I am a day person...several years of grave and I could never get the right sleep pattern going.... " graveyard eyes " were permanently part of my image. Guest guest
I have worked the late shift for 3 years (6 pm to 6 am) I LOVE IT! Not as many bs calls not as many complaints not as many 911 calls asking for the number to Pizza Hut. The stress that is encountered is different. The stress comes from really " bad calls " - fatality MVA's, suicides and domestics among other incidents that seem to happen more frequently late at night. There is definately less contact with the general public which can reduce the " administrative pain in the butt stress " dramatically. I say if you are stressed out due to the higher ups and their b.s. then go to nights and get ready for some peace! Guest guest
I agree....the midnite shift all the way! Have worked all three shifts...the bulk of it on midnites...(here..from 2200 to 0600hrs) Being Biased, I think that the " bravo sierra " or, as we would say it..the " boy sam " is not included in our shift. Not to say that we don't get our fair share of idjits and simpletons on our shift...but we are management free on this shift. The shift supervisors (road) and dispatch call the shots and make the decisions...always hand in hand. Fits like a glove. I have worked this shift for ten yrs now...along with my patrol supervisors...and we work great together and well together. Personally, I wouldn't work any other shift on a permanent basis. You get the adrenalin pumpin calls without the bs of office staff breathin down your neck. Tis wonderful. my .02 Cin in good ole Ohio happy day, be safe
Guest guest
Lyn, It may be a big relief for you. Think about the following before you make the change. Health, it may take your body a while to adjust and can effect any medications you are taking. Family, will there be people coming in and out during the day or will you be able to sleep? From reading your posts and all that is going on if these two things are ok, then by all means go for it. Midnites is a good shift, due to family constraints I can'w work it, but I have in the past and I have enjoyed it.
Guest guest
, Are we in the same boat or what? Well, they say misery loves company...I just hope we both make the right decisions. It is so frustrating to go home upset because your partner gets 8 personal phone calls an hour or conducts her 2nd job (selling a home product) while at work. After working alone the last 5 Saturday nights, I am ready to make the move. This past Saturday kinda clinched it for me...'I'm going to put in for a transfer after my vacation. I have to have a life beyond PD, and I'm sure this move will help on the home and job front. Good luck in your decision. I was diagnosed as diabetic and had to switch to evenings (1445-2300) temporarily.. but am already planning my return. I just find that my life is more full on mornings. Guest guest
After the last 3 nights, I'm going to be chomping at the bit to get on third, It's been a real killer. I'm a little leery because I know I'm going to make the person I'm bumping mad for changing shifts. I'm also not going to make one of my partners on 2nd real happy. But hey, it's time to start lookin' out for me! Hopefully my vacation will start on the 13th and run thru the 24th. It would just be my luck to have something come along and screw it up. Guest guest
Lyn, This same type thing has been one of my own recent heartburns at work. I have more seniority than one of the people, and I asked for a slight adjustment in the schedule (allowing me to work 2 Sats a month on 1st, so I could have some time with my family) and for 3 weeks, I had to wait for this person to decide if I could have that or not. About a week ago, I had had it, and was within a couple of thoughts of handing in my papers. The Lt is making some schedule changes in Aug, and I will have Sundays off to spend with my family. The corker to me, is that this person didn't have to make any changes, the Lt changed her schedule to allow me this time. I am happy to have the time with my family, but I am still a bit unhappy at the way it was worked out. Guest guest
Bumping is a gentle way of saying that you have tenure and/or seniority over them so you get your choice of shift, that is the way I ran the ship when I was the captain of my comm. center. Guest guest
Lyn, I love my 3rds, wouldn't want to work any other shift. Except for brief periods during training, I have been on 3rd for the entire past 3 years and I love it, but I am a natural " nite owl " , have been since I was a kid. If you are a natural nite owl, or think you can convert yourself, go for it. The best advice I can offer is to be consistent and be disciplined when it comes to sleep. The world tends to think that " she's not working so I can call her or she can do this. " Turn off your phone, buy a pager or cellphone that only family has the number for, and sleep. Don't feel guilty telling people, " I can't do that. " You HAVE to sleep! Also, try to get into a regular sleep schedule. Some come home in the morning and sleep, others stay up in the morning and go to bed mid-afternoon. The trick is to pick one that works and be consistent. I am enough of a natural nite owl that I can let mine be a little bit flexible but not a lot. If I am not in bed by noon, I'm hurting! Most days, I'm there by 9 am. Good Luck! Guest guest
Lyn, I worked mids for a while, like a couple years and it was ok at first, but it got to the point where i would go home and go to bed get up around noon and then, go back to bed until 10 pm. It just got to me, I was never able to catch up. when i wasn't working, I was sleeping. The other thing was we were not on a 4 and 2 schedule then and I did 5 nights of mids in a row. So you would be in on sunday night at 11 pm and end on Friday morning. It was brutal. Never really had 2 days off. I hated it at the end. I was always tired. If it is a 4 and 2 maybe that would be a little better. Who knows. Maybe you will do just fine. I do hope however it solves your problems from the other shift. Good Luck.
