Hi Marty,

I have been hospitalised 3 times for extreemly low potassium.I was taking a

laxative that you can buy at a supermarket called " sennasoft " .I didnt have " the

runs " but it seems that my potassium had gradually kept dropping and the

specialist said when it is borderline low it doesnt take a lot to put you in a

crisis.

When it is low I get an attacks of paralysis, slurred speech, strange vision and

feel like a rag doll.On all occassions I was given intravenous potassium plus

had to take it orally as well. I generally feel extreemely unwell just before

the attack. It is a pretty scary feeling when it drops out.

I now take a mix of genolac and agarol and occassionally have to add a sennasoft

if things " aren't " working.

> Wanted to let you all know that there is a link between an injured spine and

UPJ. Although, it is also a fairly common birth defect. I do have and

obstructed ureter where the right kidney ureter flows to the bladder. I meet

with a surgeon next week.

constipation. Recently, my blood work showed low potassium levels. Has anyone

else suffered from these low levels due to the laxatives they take?

My K+ has always run low. Whenever I'm in the hospital, they always

end up giving me IV K+. The labs my PCP did showed my K+ was normal,

but on the low end. Because of some other complaints, she decided to

supplement it. I currently take the max Rx dose and it still runs low.

I drink a lot of OJ and soy milk and eat lots of bananas and it's

still low. I don't think it has anything to do with the laxatives or

suppositories since diarrhea is not a problem for me (more likely the

opposite).

Hmmm, very interesting. I seldom have to use laxatives (since I started

Magnesium therapy) yet I have also been hospitalized for low potassium. What the

heck is going on? Is it something with our kidneys? Can this be related to TCS?

I have bilat extra-renal pelves, anyone else?

My TC son has chronic kidney disease and typically, when there is a kidney

problem, it tends to be that potassium cannot be broken down and the level stays

high--which causes all kinds of problems.

Low pottasium is a very common problem in Spina Bifida, especially people with

Myelomeningicole (severest form). This seems to suggest it may be something to

do with 'injuries' to our spinal chords/cords in my opinion?

It's not mentioned too much in the SB , usually because, it's really

only ever an issue when one of us is hospitalized or has a major medical issue,

requiring further tests.

People with SB naturally share a lot in common with the people in this Group.

Hi Jenn, thank you. I do think mine is laxative. My neurogenic bowel is very

hard to get to move.

Well, not sure I really understand it but it is that part of the kidney that is

supposed to be on the inside (incapsulated) is on the outside. As far as I know

it doesnt effect kidney function though. I do not have probs with uti's or

anything. I think it is just another " wierdness " that I have, also my Liver is

big, Uterus is big, have a missing venous sinus in my head, stuff like that, all

seem to be " midline " pretty much.

I go in Thursday for an iron transfusion so that I can have a hysteroscopy,

D & C and Endometrial Ablation on Tuesday. I'm about 3 pints low on blood and have

no iron in my body according to the hemotologist I saw today. I have fibroids,

bilat ovarian cysts and the lining of my uterus is about 3x what is normal.

Trying to bleed to death basically lol. But this should fix it and they will

send D & C stuff for biopsy. I hope your test goes well and they figure out a way

to help you too :)
