We had at least 5 in the lobby on Saturday evening. It looked like " Night of the Brain Dead " . Doncha hate it when it happens on the weekend? Guest guest
We haven't had too many mentals over the weekend (a few but nothing extraordinary) but it was stupid reasons for calling 9-1-1 weekend. Let's see I had the SENIOR CITIZEN and the only reason I say this is because she was very vocal about the fact that she was a SENIOR CITIZEN that had her newspaper stolen from her driveway. Yes that was a call on 9-1-1...in fact it was even a newspaper stealing in progress (rolling my eyes)...Everyone was on me about this calling to make fun of me when I dispatched it...I told them all they should know that all crimes against senior citizens are automatically taken up to felony level (this was the woman's whole attitude). My partner Rose wanted to make sure I asked her if she paid her newspaper bill maybe it was being repossessed....Rose is a sick puppy in hiding just to let you all know.... And Rose took the 9-1-1 call for children throwing eggs at each other and in the street....she asked if they throwing them in the RP's yard...THEY wouldn't dare do such a thing...I have a good mental image of this hag. I also got the lowdown on the senior citizen with the stolen newspaper from the deputy. He said the smell from inside her house was horrendous, she stepped outside to talk to him, because he wasn't going in and she had big ole toenails manicured, they were really long and hung over her sandals YUCKY!!! Then I had the loose dog call that was going to get hit and the woman saved it on 9-1-1, (she was quickly transferred off the 9-1-1 line). And to top off the weekend the power went out in Plain City and EVERYONE called with those power out questions...When will the power be on, How long is the power going to be off, Why is the power out, I called because the power company's phone number is busy can you call them for me (on our magic telephone number for them) Sorry we have the same one you do, I called the power company and got the automated reporting system can you call them and make sure they got my report. Then part of the telephones went out in Plain City so that was a bit of a relief....We had very evil thoughts...Since the some of the phones were out and we only have 1 Plain City line, the electric is out, and all 9-1-1 calls in Plain City go to Madison County we thought of revenge...set off the tornado siren just for the heck of it...scare the heck out of those poor people. (we didn't it was just evil thoughts) Okay so we are evil but Rose was going to start telling people the power was out because Aliens landed on the substation, take cover immediately the town is being invaded. Guest guest
Had a call from a elderly woman that stated she had some subjects refusing to leave her house. The were not abusive just refusing to leave. I confirmed her name, address, phone and sent the officer keeping her on the line. With the officer enroute I asked where they were in her house. She stated one was sitting in the lounger in her living room and the other was on top of the TV sitting in the flower pot. OoooooK! What are their names? I don't know. Ooooook! You are sure one is sitting on the TV in the flower pot? Yes I can see his legs hanging down. I explained this to the officer and kept her on the line till he arrived to make sure the guy didn't get out of the flower pot. Come to find out her husband had just died a few months previous and she just couldn't handle it. Doug in Leavenworth

Guest guest
Actually, the Moon is only " full " for a few minutes. Remember, the Moon, the Earth, the Sun, and everything else in the solar system (and galaxy) is moving! The Moon is " almost " full for a couple of days, but if the effect is from the " full Moon " , then it should only last a little while. Now, if a partial full moon will generate the same responses by the " loonies " <grin>, we need to determine how much of a partial will create the effect. 99%? 95%? 80%? We also need to determine what it is about the full or partially full Moon that creates the reported effects. Gravity won't work as a culprit, since the Moon is ALWAYS out there, whether or not it is fully illuminated by the Sun from our point of view. It passes over once a day regardless. So, is it the light? If so, why don't we have the same problems with regular daylight, since Moonlight is simply reflected Sunlight? Hmmmmm maybe coincidence? Being an astronomy buff, and somewhat scientifically minded, the full moon effect is one of my pet peeves, as you might have guessed. Every survey done shows no correlation between full moon and reported incidents. But that's sure the legend that exists! With > the officer enroute I asked where they were in her > house. ------------<snip>------------- ~War Story Alert! This is one of my favorites, as it reflects a couple of features about dealing with the addled, officer response to same and our concerns for both. Setting: Consolidated Comm Center (my previous incarnation). The senior dispatcher (VERY senior, if you catch my drift) took a call from an elderly woman reporting prowlers, which she described as " people hiding in her bushes. " He wrote up the card and handed it to me for dispatch, as his radio console didn't handle the city in which she lived. He proceeded to get more information while I checked who I had to send. Prowler calls required a two-officer response. I had one unit available, not even a roving unit to assign as his backup. I assigned the solo unit, who had just gotten off break-in, and we didn't know that much about him. (When he'd visited the Comm Center, he was very non-interactive, and the consensus was that he didn't possess much of a sense of humor.) I advised him I'd try to get a backup clear for the call. Meanwhile, the RP began to provide a great deal more information to the senior dispatcher: the people hiding in her bushes were " shrinking from small size to tall size. " Whoaaaa..... Oh, and the bushes were in her house, in pots....her boston ferns and diffenbachia. The grizzled old senior dispatcher actually looked at his phone handset at that point. He repeated what she'd said, so I knew what the call entailed (we were sitting at adjacent consoles) and to have her confirm what she'd told him. She did so, adding that there quite a few of these suspicious height-altering little people in her house plants and it was scaring her. Well, he also knew the status of my units as well as I did (he could see the cards in all the unit slots and he had heard me tell the responding unit I would try to get a backup...) so he tried something innovative. <grin> He asked her if she'd tried to use any household appliances on the people, to scare them off. (Stepping into her world, so to speak.) She said she had, and they weren't the LEAST bit afraid of her hair-dryer. Well, I relayed the nature of the " prowlers " to the responding unit, repeating that I'd get someone out of the station to respond as well. (Mental health patients can be dangerous, regardless of how " mild " they report their situations.) This particular address was a new one for us; we'd not dealt with this little old lady previous to that incident. The unit cancelled his backup and said he'd handle it solo. I acknowledged his traffic and called the sergeant to appraise him of the situation (wasn't gonna have anybody say I didn't send a rookie a backup on a 5150 (insane person) call.) The sergeant was tied up with something but told me to check the unit's status often. Well, duuh.... <grin> The senior dispatcher chose to terminate the call prior to the officer's arrival, since the suspects were currently at bay in the houseplants. <ahem> We were also busy in all our jurisdictions and the phones were ringing without cease. He had his own details to handle and we all had more calls to answer. The unit reported " Code 4 " - no further assistance needed - within a couple of minutes. I checked on him again in five minutes; he was still Code 4. He cleared shortly thereafter and we went on with business. He did not elaborate on the call at all. It was a busy night, all units tied up on this or that call for some time, going from this to that all shift. About 3 hours later, she called back and I answered the line that time. She needed the officer (by name) to come back. Why? " To finish the job. " Uhhhhhhh... okie doke, I thought. I called the officer on the air and advised him the RP at [1234 Someplace] wished him to return to " complete the detail. " He transmitted, " Negative, it's been handled. " She was insistent, saying " he wasn't through, yet. " So, I called him again, somewhat bemused, to relay that bit of information, and his response was, " Center, I shook her plants out and ordered all the little people into the back of the patrol car, what does she need now? " Very carefully, without snickering or sounding incredulous, I told the RP that our officer said he'd taken all the suspicious people into custody, could she explain what else was necessary? Oh. It appeared he forgot the one in her terrarium. He returned and " finished the job. " For the rest of the shift, every one of his transmissions indicated a non-solo status, as in " We'll handle that call, " or " We're [out of service] at the station; " whatever he did, he didn't do it alone, but with all those little " small size to tall-size " house-plant people on the back of his patrol unit. That department had a very liberal ride-along policy, but it was probably the only time hallucinations got to see how the city's Finest took care of its residents. " DTs on patrol. " She hadn't presented signs of intoxication because she WASN'T drunk, for the first time in years. Some genteel little old ladies never demonstrate anything so crude as drunken behavior. ===== Happy to be here, proud to serve. Guest guest
yessss.......had my share of old/mental (usually old ladies) calling in for help. My favorite caller is now long gone...but she would call in with the strangest of calls...suspicious aliens...suspicious persons " bugging " her house...she always stated it was Harvey..(the radio personality)...the flying saucers were hovering over her house again...etc...etc...Mr..so and so was putting those dang ruts in her driveway again..etc... We also would grin with her calls...usually, if we weren't busy, we would chat with her and she would settle down and state an officer wasn't necessary...(but we would have the supervisor call in to let him/her know that so and so is off her medication again...and some cop in that zone would do a drive by...CYA kinda stuff...grin) Just cause...you never know...etc... Anyways...it would be interesting to do a poll on this site to see who is the majority of mentals calling in...is it elderly women...men...etc...? Over this way...the women have the men beat, hands down...However I must say that the majority of our mentals have died off....or we don't hear from them because they are put in nursing homes..etc... and....I have found on the " waning moon " ..or is it " waxing moon " that our mental calls increase....just a meandering... She lived north of our post, and just about every night she would call and complain about the airplane flying very low over her house... very upset... really seemed frightened... very sweet. After many calls someone thought to tell her that the plane was " one of ours " meaning a State Police plane. It calmed her greatly.. and the calls came less frequent. She passed away a few years ago... I miss her. Weintraut
Guest guest
>...is it elderly women...men...etc...? It seems that it is elderly women mostly... I always figured that they were lonely, most women outlive their husbands and after many years of marriage it must be very difficult to lose their loved one. However it's not always women... When I worked at a small PD we had an elderly gentleman who oversaw the city park... He had been married for many years and after his wife died... he was very lonely. I worked all 4p-12m shifts and he would call, just to talk.... I also had a lady who would call.. same situation.. all alone. Somehow, I don't remember how, I managed to get them together. They started calling each other...became friends. When I left the department, they were still calling each other... Damn, I love this job. Guest guest
, your little people story reminded me of a little old lady who used to live in . She would call up and ask for the officers to stop by and remove hexes, little people, imaginary creatures. Usually they just spread a little magic dust around (flour) and it took care of the problem. She's dead and gone now, but every once in a while I think about her. Working on campus, we don't get the " little old lady " calls like other PD's do. Normally, we have to get our kicks because of " stupid student tricks " , which sometimes aren't so funny as imaginative. In a way I miss those types of calls. annette hallmark ahallmark@... Guest guest
In our city, the most loony calls seem to come in from men. We have the one man that has repeatedly called about " laser " beams being shown into his home. He has also accused the PD of placing cameras in his home and his vehicle,to take pictures of his private areas. He has come by the station and DEMANDED that the hidden cameras be removed as they are distrubing him, hurting his eyes and make it impossible for him to do his job...he is a writer, and the flashes from the cameras make his eyes hurt. Once, we had a call about a vehicle parked in the middle of the street, in the middle of the night. Officers go to area, but no vehicle. As they are searching the area, we get a call on the radio...there is a man, in vehicle matching this description, now at a local gas station. Strange thing about him though...he is out of the vehicle, in front of it on his knees in apparent prayer. Guest guest
We used to keep a very nice 3x5 card file for all of our 414s (old computer code for mental cases and it has kinda just stuck with us...infact my partner kris has a vanity lic plate " 414kris " ). Had the persons name/address/unique preoccupation w/whatever and dates they had called. If they called w/something out of the ordinary from what was on their card, a unit was dispatched for a welfare check, and the new problem usually added to the card. Was quite handy. But that file went away the same time we could no longer give medical warnings on the air. Bob in Tacoma
