Hello ,

I am Indian dietitian, practising in CA. A lot of foods we eat (being Indian)

during pregnancy has no reasearch background but it is told to us by our elders

from their experience so we follow that. I don't see any harm in saffron milk

because saffron is used in a very small quantitiy in the milk, which should not

have any side effects. That's another way of increasing her milk intake since

she is vegetarian.

I will be happy to guide you if you have any more questions.

Hi,

We always see pregnant women with low maternal wt. gain during the first

trimester and sometimes it extends into the 2nd trimester but and as long as she

states that her appetite has improved you should have no worries. Her

pre-preganancy BMI is WNL and from now on normal wt. gain should be about a

pound per week. As far as Indian foods, I'm not very familiar with but do make

sure she will be eating enough protein, drinking enough fluids (prefferably

water), and takes her prenatal vitamins. I just attended a maternal nutrition

workshop and I learned that wt. gain during the 2nd and 3rd trimesters is the

most important because it affects infant's birth wt. the most.

Hope it helps,

Hi All,

Would appreciate your assistance. Seeing 26 year old here from India, vegetarian

(includes milk and yogurt; excludes eggs and other animal foods). Diagnosed with

poor fetal growth. She has some questions regarding foods she is used to in

India and recommendations from relatives. Will be going back to India in about a

month. Would appreciate any references or assistance you all can provide

regarding foods/beverages in India diet that would be different from our

American fare. She specifically asked about saffron added to milk and whether

that would be okay. At 17 weeks, she had gained 3#. She is 5''1 " and pregravid

wt. 120#. She stated she had difficulty eating until 14th week and when seen at

17th week, stated she had started to gain weight and was doing better. Her 2

week follow-up with me will be this Saturday.

Thanks so much.
