- My ferritin level was at 6 many years ago when a naturopath finally

tested my levels. I have had trouble getting my levels above 23 with ongoing

supplementation - UNTIL this last few months I tried the super pills from the

drugstore - 300 mg ferrous fumerate and I was shocked when my levels suddenly

went up to 58 in 1 1/2 months! I have had my B12 levels tested and mine came

out normal -- that might be an inexpensive way to start. You can have low

ferritin and/or B12 levels with a normal CBC count. I am scheduled for surgery

this spring and they wanted my ferritin levels up so that is why I switched to a

different type of supplementation.

Cate, I have been anemic since birth. Have taken iron supplements, altered

diet etc with no results. Whenever I see a doc I tell them and they say...you

have uterine fibroids with heavy bleeding that is why you are anemic. Well I

didnt have them when I was born!!!!! I keep telling them NO I have been anemic

since BIRTH. They dont care. Maybe you should see a geneticist...they say. Well

no health insurance means no geneticist lol. Fortunately my medicare kicks in on

April 1st so I am going to request an appt with either a geniticist or a

hemotologist. I did have one doc that actually did some blood work beyond the

normal cbc and it was not normal but she did not say it was pernicious anemia

which I thought was fairly easy to diagnose once tested for. I remember my cells

were not the right size (cant remember if they were large or small), my ferritin

was 4 (she wanted it 50) and there were some other issues. It boiled down to it

was either my bone marrow

or kidneys causing something and we never could get to the further testing. She

really wanted me to see a geneticist because she thought I had some sort of

syndrome that hadnt been picked up on with all the midline stuff ie tcs, some

venous sinus missing in my brain, chiari type symptoms (although they say I dont

have it), extra something something on my kidneys (brain fart lol), enlarged

liver, etc etc. Has anyone here seen a geneticist to " put it all together " for

them? What type of improvements did you see when you started getting the shots?

Why didnt they pick up on it sooner?

Dear Yleana:

You might also have him tested for Vitamin B12 absorption.. .I have TCS, ACM,

EDS, etc., and they found a couple of years ago that I am unable to properly

absorb Vit B12 in the diet due to ANOTHER heriditary glitch, called The

Intrinsic Factor...he can be tested to see if he is positive or negative for the

Intrinsic Factor, which is another rarity, yet may go hand in hand with all of

the rest....just a thought...if he has the same problem, he can be treated

through monthly B12 injections to bypass the stomach and it will clear up

quickly.

Good luck,

Cate
