Guest guest
Well the decision has been made and Adam will be going to kindergarten in the fall. After weighing all of your advice and listening to his teachers, we feel that it is best for him to go on. The school he will be attending has an all day kindergarten, so he will start out with a half day and by the middle of the year he will work up to a full day. He will be in an MO (moderately mentally handicapped) classroom and going out into his kindergarten room with an aide for as much time as he can handle. Adam's mom was not at all happy about the label that was given to Adam and would not sign the forms. This caused a big uproar in the whole school system because Adam could not be given an IEP without the label. So after several meetings, everyone has come to a mutual agreement and his plan is in place for next year. Adam has some pretty good academic skills, but his speech is very delayed - about a 2 1/2 year level - so I get the feeling everyone doesn't understand how much he can do because he doesn't verbalize. The No Child Left Behind discussions fit here too. Adam is very stubborn and if he doesn't feel like doing something, he isn't going to do it. Example, they told us at the meeting that he couldn't put on his jacket. So I stood up, handed him his jacket, told him to put it on because we were going bye bye and guess what - he put it on. I think he doesn't go fast enough for them, so they just help him to get finishes with the task. Well, I have done a lot of research on his teacher for next year. She comes highly recommended. He is great about making individual plans for each child in her class and no one gets pushed aside. Now that Adam's mom and grandma have a reputation as trouble makers lol, maybe they will stay on their toes were he is concerned. As I am sure you more experienced parents know, I think the most important thing is to keep reminding the school system you are there watching every move they make with your child. And this is only kindergarten. lol Donna - gram to Adam almost 5 and the girls
