Guest guest
NO!!!!!!! They must be designed to that child's individual needs and DO NOT have to align with TEKS.The IDEA states: The following is a summary of what is contain in the IEP: The student's disability (ies), A statement vision statement of the student's long term goal (1 - 5 years in future). (doesn't state that these have to be base on anything but the child's needs and based on present levels of performance in each area). Describe how the student's disability (ies) effects their progress in the classroom. Short term goals, based upon the child's own learning strengths and weaknesses, How the child's progress towards these goals will be measure and how will the goals be evaluated Accommodations and modifications For students with behavior or emotional issues that interfere with their learning, the IEP should contain a program designed to teach the student appropriate behavior and social skills. All behavior management techniques to be used. Summer services Transports needs Last, type of placement. There is nothing in it that says they " have to " align with TEKS, but it does state that children with disabilities be given access to the general curriculum to the extent practicable, so this is where the " alignment " business comes from. Your child can be given both -- some objectives that align - though most of these are too broad in TEKS and will need to be broken down and made more specific. Again, the reauthorization states:IDEA Regulations1. Revise general requirements for the content of IEPs. As used in Part 300, the term individualized education program or IEP means a written statement for each child with a disability that is developed, reviewed, and revised in a meeting in accordance with 34 CFR 300.320 through 300.324, and that must include:• A statement of the child's present levels of academic achievement and functional performance…• A statement of measurable annual goals, including academic and functional goals designed to: o Meet the child's needs that result from the child's disability to enable the child to be involved in and make progress in the general education curriculum; ando Meet each of the child's other educational needs that result from the child's disability;• For children with disabilities who take alternate assessments aligned to alternate achievement standards, a description of benchmarks or short-term objectives;• A description of:o How the child's progress toward meeting the annual goals described in 34 CFR 300.320(a)(2) will be measured; ando When periodic reports on the progress the child is making toward meeting the annual goals (such as through the use of quarterly or other periodic reports, concurrent with the issuance of report cards) will be provided; So if your child has a need to learn something in order to move towards benefit from the general curriculum and they don't have a TEKS for it, you create the goal/objective for which there may be no correlation. If what your child needs to learn is in the TEKS, then great. They do not have to be used verbatim as many of our kids need things more broken down than the TEKS are.
