I know you've probably posted all this before Jan, but how does one fine out about the RT3? What tests do I need to take? Ellis Ecke, LPC, LCDCwww.thetraumaqueen.com

The more $ynthroid I took, the worse I felt. I now understand that I was converting my T4 to RT3 and going ever more hypo on more T4.

When we cut my $ynthroid in half and started adding small amounts of Armour, I started feeling better within 30 minutes. The next morning, I awoke feeling rested for the first time in years.

Cognitive problems are a common symptom of hypothyroidism. You probably need to reduce the $ynthroid and add some form of T3. Cytomel, Armour, ERFA, Naturethroid, compounded T3, compounded porcine thyroid.

If you would like to post your recent labs, we may be able to offer some suggestions.

I am now on 305 mg of ERFA (like Armour, from Canada) plus 35 mcg of compounded levothyroxine and doing well.

>> My doctor recently upped my dose of Synthroid. I was feeling OK before and the only thing I've noticed with the change is a distinct problem with remembering names and facts quickly. This is counter to what I would have thought as I thought that was more a symptom of the underlying hypo.> > Has anyone noticed an effect on memory from taking Synthroid? Thanks so much. ->

The ranges depend upon the lab.  Some docs will consider anything above mid-range as indicative that your body is converting more T4 to reverse T3 than to Free T3 (or at least not enough Free T3).  The ratio of Free T3 to RT3 is also considered very important.  I don't think there's hard science around this ratio - my understanding is that various doctors have different views based on experiences with their own patients.

I did find an interesting article in pubmed that notes that increases in cytokines (which regulate the immune system but also can increase inflammation)  can increase the level of Reverse T3:http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21891972

That goes along with the idea that toxins impact thyroid function as toxins also increase the level of cytokines in our bodies.  This point is discussed in the Thyroid Disease Manager online book:http://www.thyroidmanager.org/Chapter5b/chapter5b.htm

That's one of the reasons many of us benefit by being very careful about what we eat and our environmental exposures.  Chemical sensitivity is one sign that your body is overburdened by toxins. B.
