My daughter's thyroid panel

My dd is 16. She has some attention issues, her hands are always cold, and has a

" foggy " head at times. I had her thyroid checked, but the ped would not check

antibodies, even though I have hash's. The ped says everything is fine.

TSH 2.19

FT4 1.2 (.9 to 1.4)

FT3 3.7 (2.9 to 4.6)

She has a total cholesterol of 219, but a LDL of 63, HDH of 101 and

triglycerides at 43. So her lipid profile is kind of off. My kids tend to

have higher cholesterol

Not sure if I need to press the ped for a trial of thyroid hormone or see

someone else. I have read some about thyroid hormone resistance and attention

disorders. One example was my described my daughter to a tee, but this was

describing a child with graves, so I don't know. I am not sure that Spurlock is

the one to run to for this...

What do y'all think? Could there be another underlying issue causing her TSH to

be over 2?

Hi, Susie.

I ran your daughter's number through the range calculator:

FT4 Results 1.2| Range low 0.9| range high 1.4| percent 60%

FT3 Results 3.7| Range low 2.9| range high 4.6| percent 47%

As you can see, the Free T4 is at 60% of the range, and the Free T3 is under the

middle of the range at 47%.

I'm not a doctor, but I think this would be a difficult call for most

test-oriented doctors. For many of them, being in range equals " normal. " (As

you've probably read here, many of us feel better when our Frees are in the

upper end of the range.)

On the other hand, a doc who is aware of your daughter's symptoms, her high

cholesterol, and the family's thyroid connection might actually consider a

trial.

good luck and good health,

kidbobo

I would take her to Spurlock or Launius. Your chances of convincing the ped to treat are slim to none.
