surgery for tethered cord next Friday.  Tight Filum Terminale with lipoma.

Somebody please give me some info on what to expect such as pain afterward?  How

long should I expect to be in hospital?  How long should I expect to be off

work.  Doctor told me probably two or three days hospital 3-4 weeks back to

work?  Doctor little hard to understand, I think he said it would be a

decompressive laminectomy.  thanks wendy

3-4 weeks off work sounds very ambitious. Everyone heals at a different rates

but I think 1-3 months is more realistic. I think I have heard some people in

this group go back after a month, but others after several months or longer. I

am not back to work 10 months post-op but have other issues going on as well. I

could not have imagined going back to work till at least 3 months post-op when I

think back to my initial recovery. Also depends on your job, sedentary or not.

I was told 3-4 days in hospital but was there for 5. All depends how soon you

are up walking and navigating stairs. Expect to be lying down for the first 24

hours to try and avoid a spinal leak. I remember the pain not being that bad

until I got off the morphine which I had real trouble with. I do remember day

two being the worst and then starting to feel better on day 3. Once you get up

walking and moving around the pain will actually decrease. Do you have someone

at home to help you out when you get discharged? I really needed my husband

home for the first week to help me with showering, dressing, meals, etc. I also

really needed him in hospital when I was flat on my back. If you have any

specific questions feel free to ask.
