Hi,

I am new to this mailing list, but am hoping to enjoy meeting everyone and

learning more. I was diagnosed with diabetes on May 20th, and was put on one

pill of Glucatrol 5mg per day. It lowered my sugar so much, that they took me

off of it a week ago. I am now supposed to control with diet only. The

dietician at the hospital gave me a diet to go by, which includes eating 3

servings of carbohydrates per meal. I'm finding it rather hard to eat that

much. I'd say I'm eating more now than I did before being diagnosed. I have to

eat 3 meals a day, and she said to eat a snack before bed. I'm currently using

the Accu-chek Advantage system to check daily, and was wondering if any of you

have preferences on systems, lancets, and lancing devices?

Thanks

Beth

:-) I was actually also diagnosed on May 20th...

I can understand that. What about dividing into more than three meal. I

personally eat about 6 times a day. It seems to work very well for me

since I am not really hungry at any time and the meals are of more

" consumable " size.

I have a Accu-chek Simplicity and I think it works rather well. It's

very easy to use. When I got it I also got a Soft-clix II lancing

device. How many times do you check a day?

Hi Sune,

I only check once a day - but I vary the time of day -- sometimes do a fasting

check, sometimes do a check a couple hours after a meal -- just to see how the

rate change goes thru out the day. Mine has been very normal, long as I stay on

the diet.

I can't imagine eating 6 times a day....... I used to eat twice a day, before

being diagnosed. Having an extra meal a day seems " a lot " for me.

I have soft-clix lancets and the lancing device. I read on one of the diabetes

sites, that soft-clix isn't really " the best " you can get, so just was wondering

if anyone had any thoughts on them. The " simplicity " - I wonder how different

that is from " advantage " system?? The Advantage, was what our employee health

nurse recommended - but I had also been shown a " one touch " one where you just

lay your finger down on the strip in the machine after pricking it - and it does

the reading - the advantage you have to " drop " the blood on - and it's sometimes

kinda hard to do..........

See you

Beth

Cool. Mine is between 9 and 15 depending upon them time of day and what

I eat. I don't really have a " schedule " yet. But when I do test I do it

four times. About 7 am, 11.30 am, 5.30 pm and 20 pm.

Yeah, I can understand that. But it's 6 small meals. Well, I guess you

shouldn't pressure yourself into doing something that you can't.

Okay. I like it, but I haven't ever tried anything else. So... :-)

Try and look at:

http://www.boehringer-mannheim.com/diabetes/us/products/glucose/glucindex.html

they have information about both of them.

The Simplicity works the same way, but don't you think it's just a

matter of practice? :-)

Hi Sune,

Thanks for the url, I will check it out later, right now I need to head for

bed. I'm a night owl, but it's after 4am here, so I really need to go.....

I suppose it might just take practice, and for the most part I do pretty good,

but the other night I stuck myself 3 times trying to get a reading. The first

time I messed up and didn't have the machine on, didn't realize it til I had put

the blood on and stuck it in - so I started over, and the second time the

reading was pretty high - about 148, which I didn't think was right, because I

was feeling ok - so I stuck myself a 3rd time, and got it right that time - and

the reading was 125 - which I think was right. I don't think it could have

dropped from148 to 125 in five minutes, and I think the high reading was wrong.

Just seems easier to me, if you could put your finger down on the strip - but

I've not actually tried that.

I've heard a lot of other people say they test several times a day - I don't

know why the doctor only said do it daily. But since I only do it once, I do

vary the times around, so I know what my body's sugar does after meals, or

fasting.

Gotta go get to bed, see ya later!
