Guest guest
Another thing we all should be pushing for is a " lemon law " for houses (and condominiums)... so people who buy new houses that turn out to have serious manufacturer defects can walk away from the sale without losing any money, and perhaps with reimbursement for investments they have made in the property while the builder was acting in bad faith. All these stories about people losing their life savings because of some builder ripping them off are heartbreaking. What, really would it take to prevent a lot of pain? Not much. Some care as to building practices backed up with teeth in the laws. But the fox has been the one guarding the henhouse. If we had laws like that, laws that offered the possibility that builders/developers etc. would actually be held accountable, they would behave differently. Right now its like the Wild West. Buyer BEWARE. I had an experience last year that really made me see how stupid they are. Last year around this time my wife and I were travelling and because we were nearby, we stopped in to meet a friend who lives in one of those big sprawling largely semi-suburban cities in the Sun Belt that is experiencing major growth right now. Not far from their city we passed a HUGE housing development that was being built all at once, literally perhaps a mile or so of half built houses standing there next to the highway with bare studs and pressed fiberboard, all completely uncovered, in one of the strongest downpours that I have ever seen. (the weather radio we were carrying was warning of severe flash flooding and hail so bad that they recommended that people barricade themselves in an interior room of their homes!) I wished later that I had taken a picture, but I was in a state of shock because the rain was SO strong.. we could barely see the road... One has to wonder if those houses are occupied now and if so, if they ALL have mold problems.. I would NOT be surprised.
