ask to sign a waiver. i dont know what its called but its like a confidentiality form basically saying you wont talk about other kids etc. there is no need for all parents signature. call the superintendent they are jacking you around. Sent from my iPhone

It really makes me angry that I can't walk into my daughters school and observe her! A letter has to First be sent out and permission has to be received from all the parents for the other students in the classroom with my daughter. This takes time and it's all planned to where teacher has time to 'SET THE SCENE' per se! This automatically puts up a red flag and I'm just really angry right now! She's already in isolation most of the day except when she attends resource! I'm losing patience quickly with our district!

Do research on sLaw website about this. Children in public school don't

have same rights regarding confidentiality as children in private schools. Do

they never have parents show up to eat lunch with their kids? Or show up at

class parties? Why would that be ok and your visit not be? You're not asking

about other children, you're there to observe yours. They're picking the wrong

battle. Fight this! You're right, red flags going off for sure!

I requested that I be allowed to record my son's day while at his ARD. The request was denied because of FERPA concerns. When I called the Central Office and asked if my student could record his class in order to help him with his homework, I was told the decision was the teacher's discretion. No FERPA concerns there.... Truly believe they are hiding behind FERPA because they act differently when I am physically there and I have no way to document that they actually follow the guidelines in the BIP. How can there be

an expectation of privacy in a public setting? To: Texas-Autism-Advocacy Sent: Sat, November 5, 2011 10:59:39 AMSubject: Re: Frustrated

Can Parents

Check the NCLB Act, which I believe guarantees parents access to observe the child in the classroom, but this is really tough -- believe me, I know.  And it is a red flag when they want to keep you out.  There are other ways to hold them accountable, so you may contact me off list if you would like to learn how.  It takes longer, but can help your child.

The way they do it they are only going to put on a dog and pony show for you when you are there.  You need to gather real evidence that they are not following the law.I have been talking to another mom about this and how we need to get together as parents to enact a rule that will put all special ed classrooms such as PPCD and life skills on line so the parents may check on their children throughout the day.  They do this already in the better daycare centers.  Why not in schools?  Our children may not understand or be able to speak for themselves when they are being mistreated at school.  We must have a way to protect them.

Haven,

I agree with you so much! I recently went back to homeschooling because of how my son was being treated at school. If I had been able to see myself, he wouldn’t have stayed in as long as he did.

Yep, I'm homeschooling, too.  I have seen far to much in my work as a parent advocate to know that the laws are not being followed, no one is enforcing them, and our kids are not being educated nor protected in the public schools.  Things are slowly changing, but it is going to take A LOT of parents learning the law and holding the schools accountable to them.  In the  meantime, we need a new law which gives paretns video acces to PPCD -- all self-contained classrooms.  As it is now, they do not think are kids are worth educating, so they placate the parents (tell them what they think they want to hear, and then just provide over-glorified daycare.  Then they act as if the parents should be thankful that they get a " break " while the child is at school.  This is not what parents want.

They other issue is that there is NO distinguishing the difference between autism education and the education of children with disabilities that will not and cannot get better, so children with autism are considered " hopeless, unteachable cases.  We need to demand that any teacher who teaches a child with autism MUST have an Autism Endorsement.  If I had to had one to teach speakers of other languages, then why can any old " special ed " generalization teach a child with autism.

Our children are suffering becasue we have few if any teachers who are actually trained in research-based methodology to teach them.  If they don't know how to teach them, then how is that going to work?

Our children's rooms should DEFINITELY be Online. They put cameras thruout the

rest of the schools for safety.

Our children can't speak or report ANYTHING. They definitely need Safety

Cameras!
