Gaining and maintaining the attention of individuals with developmental disabilities is essential to teaching new skills. Active avoidance and verbal or physical aggression are behaviors that make teaching interactions aversive to both the instructor and student. This workshop teaches a collection of specific procedures instructors have found to be consistently effective in working with a variety of challenging clients and behaviors and is designed for individuals who have training in basic ABA skills - including attendance at a previous ABCs of ABA workshop. Lecture, video, role-play and handouts will be used to teach participants the effective use of reinforcement, token systems, activity book programs and the compliance sequence. Challenges with aggression, attention, motivation, hyperactivity and prompt dependence will be addressed, including procedures for initial program start-ups with children/adults of varying degrees of disabilities. Researched ABA procedures as they apply to a range of individuals with intellectual disability/PDD diagnoses, verbal skills, disruptive and passive behaviors will be presented. Box lunch provided but no child care is available. TEA Continuing Professional Education (CPE) credits available.
