Alpha-lipoic Acid Improves Symptoms of Diabetic Neuropathy

flow in diabetic neuropathy, " Jin HY, Park TS, et al, Diabet Med, 2007

Metabolism, Department of Internal Medicine, Chonbuk National

University, Medical School, Jeon-ju, South Korea. E-mail:

Summary: In a study involving 19 patients with diabetic neuropathy and

13 controls, supplementation with alpha-lipoic acid was found to reduce

symptoms of neuropathy. Researchers set out to investigate the effects

of intravenous supplementation with alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) on skin

blood flow (measured via the laser Doppler blood flow technique) and

symptoms. Subjects were given 600 mg/day ALA intravenously for a period

of 14 days. While no significant differences in skin blood flow were

found, after receiving ALA treatment, symptoms of neuropathy were

improved. These results suggest that intravenous treatment with ALA may

be an effective treatment option for patients with diabetic neuropathy.

The authors conclude, " Larger studies are needed to determine whether

improvements in skin blood flow also occur in patients with diabetic

neuropathy. "
