Guest guest
I save every email I receive, using Outlook Express helps that. And I do feel a sense of loss when I've had to format my hard and lose all the emails... I also use IRC, and I log EVERYTHING I do on IRC. I also keep record and logs of all my IM programs (except yahoo which doesn't seem to log properly). So yeah I do that too Kaylee Anyone else do this? > > I am compulsive about saving email, newsgroup posts, chat logs, and > anything I've ever written. If the email was important to you, why would you not back it up (if not as a regular thing, then at least before you formatted the hard drive)? Also-- why did you feel the need to format the hard drive? I am serious in asking this. I have been a computer geek since the 1980s, and with PCs since 1990, and while I have formatted tons of hard drives, it has always been the first time the hard disk was installed. I can't remember ever wanting to format the hard drive other than that, unless perhaps I had just FDISK'd the disk to change the partition structure. I have usually avoided formatting the hard drive, as it would be a pain to restore all of the data. Much of the time, this was back in the days before CD recording was affordable, so my backups were on tapes or floppies. I retain every email I send or that is sent to me forever. I have not been doing this from the beginning, though-- my archive only goes back four years. I do not remember what I did prior to that-- I seem to remember archiving the emails to free up space on the hard drive. I have a meticulous set of backup images (of the entire hard drive) to prevent catastrophic data loss, so my email is retained as a result. I was very upset when Windows malfunctioned and deleted my email during a routine copy a few years ago. My newest backup set was about two months old at that point, and the loss of two months of mail was not pleasant.
Guest guest
Well most times I've had to format have been critical errors, and sometimes saving emails became a non-thinking thing, and I only realise I've lost them AFTER I format :: facepalms :: > Do you also save written notes to yourself? > > Do you save letters and cards from others? > > ~~Bonnie I save cards and letters, not that I get many letters... I don't write myself many notes to save. Kaylee Re: Anyone else do this? > > Bourquin wrote: > >> I save every email I receive, using Outlook Express helps that. Yep... I can entirely associate. I'm quite a packrat, and not just with physical possessions. Although I am known for filing away the most inconsequential e-mails, it's not just Internet communications that I'm so possessive of; I still have school assignments lying around in my documents folder that date back to high school. So why do I keep all these things around? I guess it's because I never know if or when I'm ever going to need them again. I'm always hesitant to throw things away, because I don't know if I'll have any use for them later in life. -- Cody B. / " codeman38 " cody@... http://www.zone38.net/

I usually throw away cards as soon as I get them (although I do have a 3 yr old card a co-worker gave me in appreciation of my helping her with work stuff - it has a pretty picture of what looks like a Mediterranean seaside area with rocks and vegetation and water). Periodically I go through my stuff and throw away / give a way / sell stuff I don't think I will need in the future. Each object I own entails an oblication -- even if it's only to find a place to put / store it. I feel great when I've gotten rid of a lot of it so I don't have to think about it anymore. Looking over past correspondence with people makes me sad so I deleted that stuff too. June
Guest guest
I used to save stuff like that. It's really easy for me to get rid of old e mail now. As for physical things, I'm still in the process of throwing away stuff from years ago. I need the space more than I need the stuff.
Guest guest
Adam Sanford jotted this down: > I am compulsive about saving email, newsgroup posts, chat logs, and > anything I've ever written. .. For me, it depends on what the item is... Virtually everything I personally have written has been kept, most personal correspondence (email/chats/comments/e-cards/cards) from others I care about is archived as well. I also keep copies of any graphics, websites, and so forth that I've worked on, pictures I've taken (or were sent of friends/partners/family), and so forth. I haven't had any significant data losses that I can remember in any category I was archiving since 1990, and everything except the images still compresses nicely onto a CD. (The pics/graphics take up several CDs; I suspect they'd fill a DVD at this point, but I haven't tried despite having a burner.) Most of the reason for me is a combination of using my computer as an electronic record of my life since I have huge issues remembering things at times, and also for sentimental reasons. I like being able to re-read funny chats with friends, examine thought-provoking discussions to perhaps get a new angle on the subject, re-experience special moments in my relationship, and so forth. It's not very different from books for me in that sense: I like to re-read them so I can re-experience all of the emotions and possibly get new perspectives on the story or characters. -- DeGraf ~*~ http://sonic.net/mustang/moggy
Guest guest
<<<Do you also save written notes to yourself? Do you save letters and cards from others? ~~Bonnie >>> Yes. I do keep them for decades. As for the cards, those of them that are not just polite formalities and/or have sentimental stories behind them, go into a special " heartwarming file " - the most effective anti-depressant one can have. I also used to save all my college notebooks and most of term papers (well, had to part with those 11 years ago when moving from Europe to the US). That (as well as many other Aspie habits) became a godsend while dealing with my employer ( http://www.isn.net/~jypsy/AuSpin/lana.htm ) - all those seemingly useless old documents, notes, policies and email printouts ended up being called " evidence " . -Lana
