We have dead bolts on the doors that use a key on both sides so he can't get it open. I will be looking for your email about how the ankle bracelet works out. No sign of him there, nor under my house (I live in a mobile home), or under either front or back porches (lots of imaginary roads and cities to build under those places), I told Trey to go out to his Grandma's to see if Austin was there while I went to get the keys for the van and drive the short distance to their house, Once there, we saw a deputy sherriff across the street and thought nothing of it, and a car stopped at the top of our street at the stop sign thinking that the car was the owner of the corn field next door to me and that he was stopping to check his mail from Saturday (his mailbox sits next to the stop sign). When the Deputy pulled up in the drive way (after my in-laws, myself and Trey had looked around for Austin), it was then that I realized that Austin had made it all the way to the stop sign! With heart in throat I got into the sheriff's car (and banged the corner of the door into my head and have the nice little " goose egg " to prove it), and we went up to the top of the road to retrieve Austin from the woman and her children who had seen him and stopped to pick him up and call 911. Austin is fine, has no clue to the worry and scare he put into me last night. After reasurrance from the deputy that CPS wouldn't be called out for an investigation, he then informed me a program thru the sherriff's office called Project Lifesaver. It is a bracelet or ankle bracelet much like the ones used for House Arrest but on a much smaller scale, and is used for Mental Dementia patients (who are cared for at home by loved ones), Alzheirmer Patients, and mentall handicapped patients, kids with DS and Austism as well. It will cost me $10 a month for the service and every month a deputy will come out to my home, check and replace the batteries, and issue a new transmitter. I have called to have one put on Austin so that in the future (it contains a GPS system and they have a task force on hand when needed), he will be found quickly. I have also asked my soon to be ex-husband to come and install a dead-bolt on both the front and back doors, backwards so that the key part is on the inside of the house (Austin can figure things out lightening quick!) and the knob part on the outside. I urge each and everyone of you to look into this kind of program in your area and use it promptly, $10 a month is nothing when it comes to protecting our kids! Jezeca will be 5 in July is diagnosed with Trisomy 10q. She is non verbal and it scares us that one day she will wonder away and we won't be able to find her. She does that in the house now. When I can't find her I call out to her and say " Jezeca if you can hear me say Oooooo " . She does answer back then. A few weeks ago she wondered over to the neighbors front porch and was sitting there but we didn't see her. I called out and heard her answer back but it was scarry. We did have a dog tag made for her with her name and phone numbers on it and also stating that she is non verbal but knows sign language. Project Lifesaver is something that I would really be interested in checking out. My other daughter Zephany age 1 isn't talking yet. She is DS but babbles up a storm. Again, I'm very glad that all was fine with Austin. (Jezeca's middle name is Austin). We also live in a rather secluded area and I am constantly worried about loosing her . I'm going to check on to this TODAY. I know they made these types of things but the cheapest I found was $200.00. I know for me, that Project Lifesaver is only available in VA (however, it maybe called something else in other states) It was originally started in Chesapeake, VA and has trickled down to my area. But I'm sure if you were to contact them and explain what you are looking for they might be helpful to you. Once Austin has his new " bracelet " I will send a picture out to everyone, maybe then you could take it to your local S.O. and show it to them. Austin should have his by the end of the week. Guest guest Posted May 30, 2007 Report Share Posted May 30, 2007 Hi JoAnn, I know from talking to my local S.O. yesterday that some of the civic groups (ie Lions Club, Rotary's, etc) have purchased the transmitters for the S.O. so that other people can use them free of charge, and once the person is done using them, they turn them in to be used by someone else. I would suggest calling your local police or S.O. (Sheriff's Office) to see if this is possible. The woman I spoke with yesterday said she has a son who is 14 with Austism and he has the bracelet and they've had to use it at least 4 times with him and it has helped them tremendously! Even if this type of device is not available in your state or area I would started asking why and see what you can do to get them in place. I just want everyone's children to be safe and if this is the way to do it, so be it! Like I told others, I will be taking a picture of Austin with his new " bracelet " when he gets it (should be later this week), so that everyone can see it and maybe take it to their local Law Enforcement Agencies to get it started in their areas. I will include a phone number to my local S.O. if anyone needs further information that I may not be able to provide or to have Law Enforcement contact my S.O. Austin was no-where to be seen and Trey was in the tree line/forest down in the front yard, when Trey emerged with no Austin we both began searching for him, Trey went up the hill to my sister in laws house as she has a swing set that Austin loves to play on and some old toys of her kids that are left outside that he loves to play with also not too mention their 4 dogs. No sign of him there, nor under my house (I live in a mobile home), or under either front or back porches (lots of imaginary roads and cities to build under those places), I told Trey to go out to his Grandma's to see if Austin was there while I went > to get the keys for the van and drive the short distance to their house, Once there, we saw a deputy sherriff across the street and thought nothing of it, and a car stopped at the top of our street at the stop sign thinking that the car was the owner of the corn field next door to me and that he was stopping to check his mail from Saturday (his mailbox sits next to the stop sign). When the Deputy pulled up in the drive way (after my in-laws, myself and Trey had looked around for Austin), it was then that I realized that Austin had made it all the way to the stop sign! With heart in throat I got into the sheriff's car (and banged the corner of the door into my head and have the nice little " goose egg " to prove it), and we went up to the top of the road to retrieve Austin from the woman and her children who had seen him and stopped to pick him up and call 911. > Austin is fine, has no clue to the worry and scare he put into me last night. After reasurrance from the deputy that CPS wouldn't be called out for an investigation, he then informed me a program thru the sherriff's office called Project Lifesaver. It is a bracelet or ankle bracelet much like the ones used for House Arrest but on a much smaller scale, and is used for Mental Dementia patients (who are cared for at home by loved ones), Alzheirmer Patients, and mentall handicapped patients, kids with DS and Austism as well. It will cost me $10 a month for the service and every month a deputy will come out to my home, check and replace the batteries, and issue a new transmitter. I have called to have one put on Austin so that in the future (it contains a GPS system and they have a task force on hand when needed), he will be found quickly. The sherriff who brought her home neve mentioned Project Lifesaver, wonder if they have it in all areas....
