Ticia,

MOrgan had her fundo done a year ago. It was a very difficult decision,

but I am so glad that we had it done. She has been a different child

since that time. It even has lessened that amount of ear infections

that she has had! We found that when she started to get really gunky

and mucousy that we needed to vent her. And we always made sure we did

it before she ate. She had a lot of gas bubbbles at first, but now

handles it quite well with regular venting. My husband always does a

very thorough one before she goes to bed and that really helps ALL of us

sleep better, too.

Tricia-

Just a quick hello! We elected not to have a fundo done and (luckily)

my daughter outgrew her reflux at about 1 yr of age. So...

unfortunately I can give you no advice in that area. Just wanted to say

hi because I did student teaching at Kallanghur State School and just

loved visiting Brisbane! Welcome to the list!

Hi!

Myname is Tricia . I live in Brisbane,Australia.I have a ten month old

daughter named Shanae ! She was born with Choanal Atresia,Bilateral. She also

has Colobomas Bilateral ,Ear Abnormalities, Deveopmental Delay, Swallow Problems

etc:. Shanae has just had a fundo done for Gross Reflux and I am thinking I

have done the wrong thing . She has always had a small problem with swallowing

her secretions but now it is ten times worse . She is now choking and coughing

much worse than before. We are having to suction her all the time and she

waking up choking on her secretions, The doctors tell me that this will improve

but I find it difficult to believe anything they say anymore. If anyone else had

similar problems after a fundo I would love to hear about it. She has a Genie

Button and is totally G fed only tasting foods orally,

.. Thanking You

Tricia,

Welcome to you and Shanae! Glad to meet you. All I can draw on is our

experience with the fundo. My daughter, Kennedy is 18 months old and had a

Nissen fundoplication done at 6 months. She did wretch and have a hard time for

about 2 months afterwards. This was very difficult, I hated to watch her

wretch, it was awful. But, I'm glad to say, since then things have gone really

well. I am very happy with our decision to have the fundo done (the docs were

encouraging a j tube which wasn't what we were prepared for). When was Shanae's

fundo done? If it is really recent, I would give it a little more time for her

body to adjust. Good luck and I hope the secretions ease up really soon.

Tricia,

That might be a really good point that brought up. We have never

vented Kennedy, so I didn't even mention that. That could be part or all of

your problem. I had a hard time finding someone who knew how to use the

button at all after Kennedy had it put in. I basically taught myself. I

don't think they're all the rage here, but I " m happy she's got it!

What were s symptoms before the Nissen, outright reflux or

something a little less obvious? What did you try before the Nissens to

alleviate her problems?

MacKenzie is 14mos.old and as far as I can tell nowhere near

outgrowing the reflux. She's on all the meds. and is j-tube fed, but

she refluxes and chokes and aspirates off just the stomach secretions.

We're getting really tired of this and are considering putting a limit

on when enough is enough. We're thinking that by the age of 2 if the

reflux is no better it probably will never be. I'm scared to death of

the Nissen but quality of life has to count for something.

Tricia,

My daughter, Aubrey, who is almost 10 months old (Aug 19), just had her 2nd

fundo operation. Since the surgery which was only 1 week ago, her secretions

are worse and she is coughing and choking on them much worse than before.

However, Aubrey has a trach, and she constantly has respiratory infections,

colds, etc. She came out of the hospital this time with another respiratory

infection, just like always happens when she is hospitalized. We are hoping

that this is what is causing her problems with coughing, gagging, etc. and

not the redone fundo. Is it possible that Shanae could have caught a cold or

something like that, which may be causing it?

One thing I would add is if you do the venting, make sure you replace the

electrolytes, etc. stuff that comes out.....for Aubrey, we used a syringe,

flipped it upside down to push the air out, then put the stuff that came out

(which I think contains needed electrolytes) back in....

Tricia,

Welcome to the list. I am late in saying hello, as I was in New Orleans at a

conference.

didn't have a fundo, but it seems like the experts have been giving

great advice, as usual! I hope that Shanae is doing better soon.

Good Luck

Jeanie,

's reflux symptoms were not as severe as some on the list, but she

vomited and gagged a lot. We couldn't let her cry hard or even giggle

hard as this would cause her to cough and puke. Then she'd have ear and

sinus infections from the vomit and irritation in her nose and ear

canals.

We tried Prilosec and Reglan (which worked the best)and also had

cisipride, which didn't seem to do anything. We also tried feeding her

very slowly, but as she got a little bit more active, it was hard to not

feel guilty making her sit for 1 hour plus. We elevated her bed, tried

sleeping sitting up, etc. but nothing worked.

's fundo is not a full Nissen, it is about a 270 degree wrap,

according to her doc, so she is able to burp some and she does vomit a

tiny bit if she is very sick.

Hope this helps.

Hi Tricia,

Welcome!! Glad to see you finally post. I would have welcomed you

earlier, but I have been sooo busy. Hopefully the others on this list will

be able to answer all those questions that I haven't been able too. :-)

Hope Shanae is doing better. I will contact you, as soon as I get some

time.
