Guest guest
Gideon is 16 days old today and he is gaining weight steadily and starting to eat on his own, he was born 5 weeks premature and so we are still in the intensive care unit at the hospital. I am from washougal washington, clark county. I love my son so much, I never knew I could love someone so much. When I first found out he had downs I was very upset, I cried for him just thinking about how hard life might be for him, I also cried because I had this image of what my baby was going to be like. When I found out Gideon had MDS I was more relieved. After a day or two though, it doesnt matter what he has I love him and I am going to work hard with him and help him reach his greatest potential. He has a small AV Canal defect in his heart so that is our next challenge. I just wanted to join to maybe chat with other parents whos kids have MDS in my area, I want to learn all I can about it. Sincerely, Marriah

Guest guest
Hi My little girl, Zephany will be 1 year old on June 6. She had her AV canal repaired on Feb. 27th. She did great and I was really surprised because they had her off all pain meds within 48 hours. Sitting up really quick too. Her hole was as big as a mans wristwatch face, and she also had 3 smaller holes. Only one hole closed on it's own. One week later she was to be released but her heart started skipping beats. The doctors decided to keep her overnight to monitor her and the next day total heart block. They had to jump start her heart and rush her to OR for a pacer. Now she is fine and her pacer only paces her at 4%. The doctor said for this type of AV canal repair this was the only case that he had to go back in and put in a pacer. The pacer will be coming out within a year since she's not using it but at night when she's in a deep sleep. Guest guest
We were really lucky was released from the hospital two days early and had no problems after. She was fully healed in six weeks.I can't even tell you how hard it was to hand her over to the surgerical nurse, but I knew If I didn't I would never get to know the precious little girl she would become. I know how intense and scarey the NICU can be ( we were there for two months) so keep your spirts up and even though it's hard try to get enough rest you can't be there for him if you wear your self out.I'm so glad you found this group these people are wonderful . Don't be afraid to ask anything. Guest guest
Marriah, Welcome, I'm Becky (Also the PR Officer for IMDSA) and Austin had the AV Canal defect at 4 months and had surgery at 5 months to repair it, but when the Heart Surgeon opened Austin up he found the diagnosis was wrong and that Austin had 2 holes in each canal. Austin spent 3 hours in surgery, was off the venilator by 4PM the day of surgery and had the chest tube removed the next day and by day 3 Post Op was on the Pediatric Ward and was home by the weekend. He's been unstoppable ever siince. He took about 2 months to completely recover from surgery. Hope this helps some, Becky Mom to Austin 4.5 MDS athena3330 wrote: he may need surgery they said, but the holes are small and there is a chance they will heal on there own, how long did it take your little girl to recover after surgery?
