Guest guest
Crew, All you who would like to have children but would prefer that they be NF2 free--it's not really possible, yet; to replace the defective gene. They have found something small enough to go into each of the genes that need a defect replaced. Large problem; the corrected gene is too large to fit into this tiny " Thingy " which I think they also called a " virus " . Problem is only half solved. There is another solution in that they can and have taken eggs and sperms in vitro (sp) and then by checking the genes can tell if that particular embryo has the defect that causes NF2. If it does it is usually discarded! The best news on this is that just because the child inherits the defective gene does not mean that whatever triggers NF2 will do so in that child. (Yep! Sounds like which came first the chicken or the egg; to me, too!) Just trying to remember to pass on what little knowledge I got at the SHHH Convention. Hugs, ie P.S. They did recommend genetic couseling if you know you have a certain syndrome and would like or are planning to have children.
