Guest guest
I think an Eci case manager could help?Sent from my iPhone We are in Greenville, Texas. My friend has told me of a friend who has 2 little girls, 2 and 4. The 2-year-old has a diagnosis of autism. HEr friend's husband lost his job and just started a new one, driving a truck and is gone most of the time. This mom has been denied disability for this child 3 times. I would like some information about where to direct her to get her a case manager who knows the way things work here. (I am pretty new to Texas and don't have a clue, but would like to help this lady.) Christmas is going to be very bleak for them, I understand, little food and no presents for the kiddies. Also, they are getting behind on their mortgage. Is there some information you all can give me that I could pass along to this mom? She really needs help. Thank you, Caroline

Guest guest
She needs everything. Therapy for the little girl, food stamps, she (mom) was just diagnosed with Lupus last Friday. So, you can see, she is in deep trouble. Her husband is gone driving a truck, and I get the idea (though no one said) that he left to take this job in lieu of separation. Her marriage is very stressed. She doesn't have any of the house bills in her name, so that may be why Salvation Army wouldn't talk to her. Like I said, I am not much help to her yet, but I thought if I got some leads here, I could at least make the phone calls before I try to sit down with her (she's my friend's friend) and talk with her a bit. My baby grandson in Denver was diagnosed Autistic at almost 2, so I just had a special concern here, but have no knowledge of what is available. I will call the Autism Society. Is there an office in the DFW area? Thanks, all. I appreciate any help. Guest guest
Have her call early childhood intervention. The state will take care of him until the age of three and then it will be the school districts. She can get services free through ECI such speech, physical therapy and occupational therapy.Sent from my iPhone She needs everything. Guest guest
Encourage her to go gluten free. Lupus and Autism are related and removing gluten will be important for them. I’ve included a link for feeding a family of 4 on food stamps a gluten free menu. In the end the children may need less services/therapy if they aren’t inflammed. Mom will be stronger to navigate if she also reduces inflammation/infections. http://www.tacanow.org/family-resources/gfcfsf-diet-on-food-stamps/
Guest guest
The local MHMRA office assigned a case manager for us and is providing Aba services but they havea waiting list. Make sure she applies early as it is more effective at an early age. Guest guest
What I have seen is that everyone I know had to get a lawyer to sue Social Security to get SSI. There are organizations out there that actually for free, help people get SSI and are very successful. You can probably learn about them via Googling. One time I asked an SSI employee why they turn people down who would seemingly qualify. Her answer was (no kidding), " You need to keep reapplying, rather than just giving up when you are turned down. " I guess that's why governmental agencies get a bad rap. Guest guest
I have seen several reports that there is a connection between parents having chronic conditions like Lupus, and their children having autism. Some health practitioners actually give them the same treatments, which target rebuilding the immune system. Love and prayers, Heidi N She needs everything. Guest guest
We were approved right away when we applied, but we had an extensive therapy and school history by this time, plus had had many evaluations done. When first diagnosed we made too much money to qualify. Marilyn
Guest guest
Hi—Wow. . . .bless her heart. First off, she needs to get some general help. . . .I suggest that she try some of the local churches if she is not already affiliated with one. Churches are a wonderful source of community resources. It can be very tricky applying for disability with a little one, because to qualify, you have to demonstrate a markedly difference in skill compared to same age children. That’s really hard to do with a two year old. She could try the 211 database, but I have really mixed results with them. . . much of the information related to disability is useless, but they are pretty good for resources with housing assistance, food stamps, etc. Has she applied for WIC (Women, Infant, Children) benefits? From my search, Greenville was in Hunt County. . . http://www.huntcounty.net/HealthDept/health.htm calling them will help direct her to the local WIC office for food at least. Next, she needs to find her local ECI (early childhood intervention, provides services to kids with autism and other diagnosis until the age of 3) provider ASAP:http://www.dars.state.tx.us/ecis/providers/providernetwork.shtml I couldn’t tell from this list which one would be closest to Greenville. They are *needs driven* though, and in order to get good services parents have to throw a fit to insist on 15 – 20 hours a week of therapy for their kids: speech, ot & behavior therapy (adding up to a total of 15 hours, not 15 hours each) Next, she needs to get in the with DADS. . .http://www.dads.state.tx.us/services/contact.cfm this will help her find the local service provider. I would strongly recommend that she try to get the 4 year old into a head start program (they probably will refuse to take the 2 year old even though they are legally allowed to refuse because they receive federal funds) to help her get a break. Four years olds are tough in and of themselves. http://doodledays.com/index.php?option=com_headstartcounty & state=TX & county=HUNT & Itemid=118 Hope this helps.
