Guest guest
my dd's asthma has been flaring up on and off since Oct. several bouts of bronchitis and sinuse infections adding to this and having the swine flu didnt help. today I brought her to her asthma/allergist. When he examined her he said she was wheezing pretty bad but becasue she did well on the breathing test he wasnt worried..maybe he wasnt but we were. this breathing test is where you blow in a machine and blow leaves off the tree, it takes like 30 seconds to do this. DD had done a nebulizer about an hour before the appt. and the dr. knew this but again said even though she was wheezing the test were good. since when does a test override symptoms? his reasoning was because her nose was so congested that this was the reason for wheezing. my dd ask him why it hurt to breath and why it was nec. to take two nebulizers in a row to get a little relief. he just said to call him Mon. if not better and he put her on advair 500/50 instead of her 250/50. could a really congested nose cause wheezing and a need to use a nebulizer two times in a row 3 to 4 times a day? how accurate is the test she did? any advice would be appreiated. jean
Guest guest
I am not familiar with the test your daughter had to do, but I do know from my own experiences, that if I have a cold with alot of nasal congestion and irritation/inflammation, my asthma does tend to flare up a bit. Maybe what the doctor heard was an upper airway wheeze which is more likely to be in the trachea vs a lower airway wheezing which would be in the lungs. It sounds like he did take some consideration in what your daughter said though since he increased her advair...give it a try and see what happens. Depending on when her last round of bronchitis was, and how severe her coughing fits were, she could have some inflammation in her rib cartilage which would also make things hurt when she breathes...or some pluerisy is possible as well. Both of these would make her hurt. I am just getting over a cold that wasnt even bronchitis, but made me cough so much I ended up with the inflammed cartilage in my ribs...and it really made me miserable. I wish I could tell you more about the test itself... how old is your daughter again? Ann
Guest guest
How old is she? If she is young (under 10) the syptoms aren't always as reliable. However, if she gets worse don't wait for Monday. Take her to the ER. Hugs. Guest guest
I used to do both at my allergy & asthma clinic. And I am going back to the at clinic at the end of January at the University of Minnesota. So I'll check it out again... Anne There is a difference in spirometry and pulmonary function tests. Spirometry is done in the doctors office. Usually 3 blows with a computer visual aid. PFT's are done in the box. Kind of like a phone booth. The docs don't have those in their offices. They have to order them. PFT's are much more extensive. Its where you put the mouthpiece in your mouth and blow and at the end you inhale while it is still in your mouth. It is hooked to a computer with a picture of a tree and the goal is to blow off all the leaves. I do a similair one where I blow into the mouthpiece but they block my nose off with a clip and it registers on a handheld machine.. my daughter is 18.she has been sick on and off since Oct. with bronchitis, sinus infection and swine flu. She seemed better but once she is off the antibiotics the nasal congestion and headache and face pain around her sinuses start back up and then it goes right to the chest. She did have dental surgery a couple of weeks ago and was on an antibiotic for this but it didnt seem to help the sinuses or headache(face pain). her dr could have heard upper airway wheezing(what I think he said) and he did up the advair. She is still having problems and using the nebulizer every 4-5 hrs. even after she uses it she is coughing a lot and I dont know if this is her asthma or just a twitchy airway. She says she cant get a full breath in but I think now she is anxious and this isnt helping. If she doesnt get better I will bring her in Monday to her gp or ER over weekend if necc. i know in the past with my dd and with me that our asthma gets worse very quickly. I just heard her coughing..sounds kind of croopy(sp) would pluerisy hurt in her back? or maybe that is just from the coughing.ok thanks for your help..hopfully things will start improving soon.psthanks also Madeline for the response. jean >> > I am not familiar with the test your daughter had to do, but I do know from my own experiences, that if I have a cold with alot of nasal congestion and irritation/inflamma tion, my asthma does tend to flare up a bit.
