Hi Bonnie. I am cough variant, which you probably already know. I tried several controller meds, and I found that daily Symbicort works best for the nagging dry asthma cough. I am also diabetic, and the Symbicort doesn't seem to bother the diabetes at all. Although, all of the asthma meds have the ability to do so. Asthma is well known to cause fatigue. So, it very well could be the culprit. Good luck. Let us know how you do. Madeline http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/Lungs_on_Vacation/

Hi,I have been lurking for a while and appreciate all I have learned. My question is: I seem to have acquired a nagging cough. I do take Singulair daily and Ventolin (Albuterol) if it gets unbearable. I have been tested several times and I have no allergies. The physician recommended that I begin daily maintenance Rx's; however, I am a diabetic and take many, many drugs. I am getting older and always seem to feel tired. Is this just old age or could it be my asthma. I do exercise and keep a fairly active life-style.Opinions pleaseBonnie

Hi Bonnie,

I cough also with my asthma, that is my main symptom actually, but 99% of the time it is my allergies that set off my asthma so I am pretty much half way gone before my asthma kicks in.  And I was just diagnosed with diabetes type 2 on November 13th, 2009 although I am sure I was diabetic for a few months before that too.   I unfortunately am most often treated with steroids for my allergies and asthma which is doing wonders to my blood glucose numbers to the point that I am currently on NPH insulin with my steroids.  If I make it through the weekend without landing back on steroids I will be amazed... this is the first time I have been off of them since the beginning of December I think... crossing my fingers I can stay off of them for a few more days at least!

The only asthma med that I take every day is Singulair although I do have Albuterol and Xopenex nebs as needed for asthma attacks, but I don't take them on a daily basis unless absolutely necessary because they make my heart just fly!!!

I have already had epi tonight (at a friend's house and she had candles burning through out her house and I am allergic to them), I really don't need to add albuterol to the mix unless absolutely necessary.  And when I do, do my nebs I don't use a neb machine, I use 100% oxygen because I carry that with me everywhere I go.  I have a fully stocked ALS oxygen bag.  I carry everything except intubation equipment, although given the option I could probably intubate myself if need be.  (I used to be a paramedic therefore I am a ROTTEN patient... I am good at telling the doctors exactly how to treat me, and most of them don't like that by the way!)

Okay, there I did it again, I wrote a book.  Sorry about that!

Anne

Hi, Bonnie --

It could certainly be asthma, but given that you're mentioning age, you might want to ask that they do a b-natriuretic-peptide test to rule out congestive heart failure.  Those coughs can sound really similar.

I've got diabetes too, and I sure can sympathize with the nightly handful of drugs.
