Guest guest
I suggest that she go to MD for evaluation. Sherman is recommended. The only less invasive procedure would be a hollow needle biopsy for diagnosis. Follicular and Hurthle cell cancers cannot be diagnosed from a fine needle aspiration, but the hollow needle biopsy may yield enough intact tissue to diagnose or rule out cancer. If she had radiation for the breast cancer, then she is at a much greater risk for thyroid cancer. If any cancer is found, then a total thyroidectomy is the only treatment. Radioactive iodine is usually recommended after that. If she has the TT and does not do well on the $ynthroid that most endos prescribe, then she should let us help her find a doc who will treat with Armour or Cytomel. Where is she located? >> My mother's good friend (60ish) has just survived a round of breast cancer/mastectomy, not sure what all was associated with her treatment. Now the doctors have discovered nodules in her thyroid, but the biopsy has been inconclusive. She is very, very hesitant to have her thyroid removed without any kind of confirmation of cancer. She has a daughter-in-law who struggled greatly and really went off the deep end after having her thyroid removed, and she's also heard my mother talk about my thyroid issues after having my thyroid removed.> > She is looking for doctors for 2nd opinions and is willing to travel anywhere in the U.S. to find someone who may offer some advice especially on less invasive treatment measures. Do any of you have any recommendations? Starting with someone in Texas first would be great, but I know they would travel anywhere to get more advice on what to do.> > Also, I mentioned to her that I remember hearing about/reading a study which shows that high doses of replacement thyroid hormone could limit or even shrink the growth of thyroid nodules. Does anyone else remember hearing something like that and have any idea where I would find that survey to pass along to her?> > I really want to help this dear friend out, and spare her the agony of having her thyroid removed and all the subsequent issues that go along with it. > > Thanks, >
Guest guest
I don't know much more than I posted before so I don't know if she had radiation for breast cancer, but the diagnosis and treatment was only a year ago. I'll pass on the name at MD , she's in Shreveport, but their son lives in Houston and they are down there all the time. So MD is very doable. If anybody else can think of any other suggestions, that would be fantastic. Thanks, > > > I suggest that she go to MD for evaluation. Sherman is > recommended.
