What would be the idea behind subscribing anonymously? *hugs* Toni BTW

glad you're back!

Toni Fuller asks:

<< What would be the idea behind subscribing anonymously? >>

I would have to think that some diabetics would not want their disease and

personal comments publicly-known. I went through a long period where I did

not want the diagnosis known. I was uninsured and trying to land a job that

included medical benefits. And then I went to truck driving and, while it is

not illegal for a non-insulin-dependent diabetic to drive, I nevertheless

didn't want anything to make me seem less job-worthy, as I was already

trying to overcome the " negatives " of being a woman, being middle-aged, and

having several years of self-employment, and in a field other than

transportation.

I agree with you Susie. I had subscribed awhile back and the first two times

I tried to post to the list my messages were bounced. I unsubed then because

I realized that although there was a lot of information there, all the stress

was not doing me a damn bit of good.

a close friend, new to the LC and diabetes world recieved an equally acid

response from Grant and was bounced unceremoniously. She sent me his letter

or I don't know if I would believe it. She tried to get through to him only

to be rebuffed again and again. She later tried to join again(it is one of

the best for scientific education about this LC-D stuff) and received an

apology! Go figure.

Gosh, am I the only one from this list left who is still on LC-D list? I got

bounced off too about two weeks ago for no reason and no post from anyone

explaining it so I just pulled myself back on it. So far it's not stressful

for me. If I'm the only one from here to there I guess I'll be the one to

he has been unsubbing Folks he feels do not meet his Standards of

I wrote a friendly note to Grant Magnuson, suggesting that he was losing a

lot of potential list members because of how complicated the sign-up process

is. I also mentioned that I was sharing some of the posts from LC-DIABETES

with this group, and how helpful many felt they were. Here is Grant's

response:

<< Be careful some one doesn't file to protect their copyright against you;

I

now have further proof by your own email statement that this violation of a

posters copyright is occurring. >>

As if the posts were copyrighted ... what nonsense!

<< " my " list is not about quantities of subscribers or those who are smart,

it

is about those who have respect for others and quality posting, I guess

something you're saying " your " list doesn't have (unless you steal it from

others). In my stable of LC lists there are over 6000 subscriptions, the

majority would rather have quality that quantity, so yourself and others who

feel they want to do anything they want whenever they want, then can go else

where to do it, but not on one of my lists.

Pretty easy and enjoyable concept, quality not quantify, but it does require

respect and dedication to sharing information; giving as well as taking.

Hope you are happy any where else but here. >>

And here I was, blaming the sign-up snafus on the mail robots. I, along with

many others, feel relieved I no longer have to jump through Grant's flaming

hoops time after time, just to have the " privilege " of posting to " his "

groups.

unless he is claiming copyright for everything in the list he runs then it

should be free and clear

this is just my opinion we could spend years discussing who has rights on

Internet email messages posted to groups requiring a subscription.

does he have a disclaimer agreement ?

Neither our posts nor the posts in LC-DIABETES are copyrighted. I think it

was just Grant pitching a hissy-fit. I appreciate the expertise in that

group, as well as all of Grant's hard work over the years making this

valuable info available to his fellow diabetics. I indicate the author's

name and cite LC-DIABETES whenever sharing a post from that group over here,

but I delete the poster's e-mail address, becausse I wouldn't want the

author to get swamped by questions from a group unknown to him/her in

response to a post shared in this group. We would all be grateful if you

would be so kind as to share the most worthwhile ones, Vicki.

Susie

P.S. I'm not a lawyer, but worked for them for many years, and married one.

Contrary to Grant's statement, even copyrighted material can be reposted, if

there is no financial gain from it and if you receive permission.

I still have the list of rules handy. Here is what Grant has to say

regarding copyrights:

" #23 You must respect the " Intellectual material " copyright of

others, therefore it is the subscriber's responsibility not

to post protected material without expressed permission of its

owner and attribution. "

" Protected material " would strike me as a particular writing the author has

specifically copyrighted. I can't see a way that Grant could copyright the

material written by others and merely propagated by him. I worked for patent

attorneys, and was also an editor for a book publisher. We can't just claim

something is copyrighted without following a set procedure.

I have never met the guy and never hope to do so - sort of like a purple cow -

but he sounds like he really needs to get a day job. Item #23 is just so much

gobbledygook

I also was bounced from Grant's list! Looks like we're all in pretty good

company. (Each other's.)

My fatal sin was arguing with Ron Sebol about not having time to test

personally for the glycemic index, food by food, at 15 minute (or was it 30

minute?) intervals. I was having a difficult time understanding why a low

glycemic index food shot my BS up, and how to correlate the GI with the

carb count in a particular food (meal). I still don't fully understand

how they correlate.

At the time I didn't have sense enough to change the post enough (I sent it

three times) to make Grant think I was trying a different approach. After

all, I was asking Ron, not Grant. I guess I'm just another of the

" Unscientific " blokes who fell by the wayside. Anyway, unlike Grant, I

have a life beyond sticking my fingers and graphing food intake and BS

readings. (None of which are copyrighted, BTW. Hee-hee-hee.)

And I was the ONLY person from that list who had a current copy of the ADA

Exchange List I could send to Ron so that he could do a study on the

Exchanges. (At my copying and postage expense, to boot. -- I figured

that was the least I could do to help out. I do not regret this action

however, I'm a firm believer that " What goes around comes around. " )

I suspect one of these days Grant will find out where things are at. I

was tempted last night to send him an e-mail. It might have said

something like: " My fellow refugees from your list and I are all well and

happy on another list. We're quite an illustrious group. Go stick

yourself. " And list all our names. But I think I don't quite dare. My

post would likely be rejected by that auto thingee, anyway. Furthermore I

don't have permission from you-all to use your names.

The list of " the bounced " grows. Does the plot thicken? Really, I don't

think so. Poor Grant. As Pogo said:

" We has seen the enemy, and he is us! " (Walt . -- Do you remember

that cartoon strip from the 50's??)

Probably not. --- Until you get the treatment Susie got (I don't remember

all the details now --but -- . ;-).

In the meantime, keep the rest of us informed as to any good stuff you

find. (I think I'm cribbing from someone else's comment here. --- Ron

Sebol is pretty good at coming up with points and ideas. .
