Guest guest
my son is in f/t kinder with minimal supports. he has an IEP. He has a goal to write kinder sight words but I am now realizing its not good enough now that I am seeing "how" he writes first hand. He was working on a writing sight words homework assignment tonights. So, I didnt realize it until tonight that he probably needs some intensive help to correct a possibly very serious problem for later down the road. And now when I think about it the school really set him up for failure on this and I never realized how serious it could be back in PPCD. The problem is how he writes. He starts every letter at the bottom and will break the flow to finish the letter. His school uses the method of writing that has teh little tail on the end of each letter to prepare for cursive writing. I realize now that the way he writes his letters by starting at the bottom he is doomed to not be able to write in cursive. I dont know when they start doing cursive writing, is it first or second or third grade? anyway, I am about to call an ARD to have a more specific goal added to his IEP to state something about writing his letters in proper form. Any suggestions? I am afraid they will pull the "its not required for kindergarten" or some bull crap like that so if someone knows of a reference on where they should be on writing letters in kinder or first grade I would most appreciate it. Thanks. Lorree
Guest guest
Lorree we love Handwriting without tears. I do it at home with my kids. You might get the school to use this. It's used in many schools around the nation. http://www.hwtears.com/ > > my son is in f/t kinder with minimal supports. he has an IEP. Guest guest
Lorree, I posted, not sure where my post is. In any case, we use Handwriting Without Tears....I use it at home. Many districts around the country are using this. You might get your school to do this with him. http://www.hwtears.com/ > > my son is in f/t kinder with minimal supports. he has an IEP. Guest guest
They don't even do much handwriting in regular Kinder class where my dd goes. IF YOU don't say anything then they will continue to do what they are doing and he will fall further behind. They tried to teach my dd Denilian (beginning cursive with tails) when she was 3 in PPCD. I was shocked because she couldn't even make a straight line, trace a line, didn't have the visual perception to copy a letter, and she didn't have fine motor skills to write a letter. I requested ARD and put a stop to it. Haven Delay on this group has helped me so much and she's the one who told me about Peer Review Research-Based Programs that are mandatory with children with Autism. Def call an emergency ARD but take advocate. Your child can't be expected to write words if he doesn't even know how to properly write letters. It's irrelevent what his peers are expected to do or learn because his IEP determines his for his unique needs.
