Guest guest
I think the program is just great. We are getting a real kick out of watching how Adam is reacting to it. He calls the DVD Babies (there is a picture of a baby on the front) and as soon as he is up he is saying watch Babies. He knows all of the flash card, but I wouldn't say he is reading. I think it is more memorizing those words by sight. It is so interesting because Adam has also memorized chunks of the dvd. For example, if we show him the flash card for " arms up " he will say " Arms up, Arms up. Put your arms up. Go ahead. You can do it. " One thing, he has learned all of his colors from the dvd. We couldn't get him to understand colors and now he knows them all. He also sings all of the songs. We are ordering the rest of the set for him. I think it has improved his vocabulary along with learning the words. He responds so well to learning from dvd's, that we were actually thinking about buying an " I can learn English " dvd and seeing if it will improve his vocabulary more. It has also made him play with his new cousin Mia a lot more. He is alway claping her hands and counting her toes like they do in the dvd. He loves this set and I am sure he wil love the others too. I just wish they weren't so fast paced. If they give a choice, they don't give time for the kids to answer. Even a typical child would have a hard time picking an answer. Guest guest
Thanks Donna for the update! I appreciate all of your input on what you see is and is not working. I think some strong points you have mentioned is that it has increased his vocabulary and he knows his colors! That is super great! And, he may be reading and you just don't know it yet. A lot of reading is about memorization when they are young. I know that all of my boys learned site words before anything else. So, if he is memorizing them, then he knows them. Try writing the words on just a plain sheet of paper and see what he says. If you do order the " I can learn English " dvd, please let us know how that works with his language. I think it would be very interesting and I agree that it probably would help him! Kristy Donna Spudic wrote: I think the program is just great. Guest guest
Just one more note. I think you are right about site words and it is about memorizing. One advantage Adam has with this program is he already knows all of the sounds that each letter makes. Yesterday, he was laying on the couch with his mom. She was wearing a t-shirt that had a turtle holding a sucker that said pop on it. He started making the P sound and the O sound and said POP. So he is getting the concept. Then he pointed at the turtle, who is wearing round glasses and said Lennon. His mom is a big Beatles fan. Donna Kristy Colvin wrote: Thanks Donna for the update! Guest guest
Donna That is FANTASTIC! He knew how to sound that out and did it AND read it! That is right where he should be at this age! Way to go Adam! It is hillarious that he associated the turtle's glasses with Lennon! Adam is such a hoot! Kristy Donna Spudic wrote: Just one more note. Guest guest
Sorry - I haven't had time to check my email every day, so I am responding a little late for the newsletter. Still wanted to let you know Adam has completely mastered this dvd. We can even set all of the flash card out and say " Find Tiger " and he will point to it. I am really proud of him. We are having a lot of problems at his school right now. All of the PROFESSIONALS involved in his education say this is nothing to be impressed over. He is just memorizing things and can really put them into practice. I am not a reading teacher, but to me reading is a lot about memorizing things. Yesterday, we got a note about how Adam doesn't know his shapes or colors. He has known his shapes for at least a year or more and this dvd has taught him all of his colors. We practice every day - I know he knows them. This is so frustrating. Guest guest
The Your Baby Can Read program is a DVD/Flash card set that shows children and animals doing things. Then, after each part with the child or animal, it goes to the word and says the word while an arrow points to each letter. It encourages the child to say the word too. (actually, this may be visa versa now that I think about it) We introduced this program with the Your Baby Can Read developers to see if it helped with babies and young children who have MDS. Research has shown that children learn the very most as babies and toddlers and that it is best to teach them reading before the age of 1! It was my thought that not only would it enhance reading, but also increase vocabulary. And, those who have participated, have said that it is enhancing reading and vocabulary, but also it has helped Adam learn all of his colors (which he never understood before) and they all seem to be singing A LOT now that they started the videos! This was an introductory program to see if it did help with children with MDS, so that we could change the marketing of the program to concentrate on children with special needs. We only had a few slots where families could request a free starter kit. The starter kit comes with a dvd for the kids, and instruction dvd for parents, and flash cards that have pictures that slide in so you can hide them if you want. Then each dvd set comes with more flash cards. You can purchase the whole set from our Usborne Books Representative at http://www.imdsa.com/usborne.htm (just click on the logo) I have to emailed our Usborne Books rep to see if she can make these available individually. (She is very sick right now, so I don't know when I will hear from her) Right now they are in the complete set and it is not really a bad price, but I understand that people may want to just buy one at a time! So...that is the Long " short " of it! Guest guest
Donna, that is why I homeschool. I am advocate of homeschooling - of course, I understand, that it is not right for every family - my daughter did attend public school and had some wonderful teachers - but when you hit a wall and see that they are not learning - don't be afraid to homeschool if you can. I joined our local homeschool group here and have even started a special needs group within our homeschool group for parents who are homeschooling special needs children. Hope you can get things worked out. Charlotte Re: Your Baby Can Read Sorry - I haven't had time to check my email every day, so I am responding a little late for the newsletter.
